Hi again,
I was looking thru New York passenger arrivals for women named Maria, Maria Grazia, or Grazia with birthdates around 1864, and I found a ship manifest for the Plata, where a lot of the women's surnames are given as "mog" and the men's as "fig". Any idea what this abbreviation means?
Thanks!
- Maria
Any idea what "Mog" means?
Re: Any idea what "Mog" means?
Hello Maria,
An educated guess.
"mog" possibly moglie (wife) when a woman was travelling with her husband.
"fig" possibly figlio (son) when a male child is travelling with his father and/or mother. Could also be shorthand for figlia (daughter).

Another good site to look at which explain various manifest markings would be..

Make sure you take the time to go through them since you may need to refer to them later. Excellent guide.
