I think I might be in trouble here. I cannot obtain a copy of my great-grandfather's birth certificate because it was lost in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. This is a critical document for proving ancestry for the Italian consulate. What do I do? Has anyone else encountered this? Is there another acceptable document I can use instead? I don't know how to prove the paternal lineage from me to my great-great grandfather now. Will census documents work? Help! Thank you so much.
I would imagine that you would need a certificate of non-existence of birth record due to fire in 1906 followed by whatever the Italian Consulate dictates as an appropriate substitute. This is hearsay on my part. =Peter=
