Italian Census?

Post by jwiilliams »

Does anyone know a website that I can access the Italian Census from? Does such a website exist or do I have to contact Italy directly?
I wrote a letter in English to Roccalumera, can they read it or does it have to be in Italian?

I also read about a family paper that I could obtain from the town that lists all members of the family and their relationships. Does anyone know how I can get that?

I have roots in Roccalumera too (although I have not yet persued that branch of research). The document you refer to is a certificate of the state of the family (certificato di stato di famiglia). Not all towns will supply you with these certificates, as they take time and research to compile. One of my ancestral towns charges you 10 euros per name that they have to research. Every town has a different policy.

Settore Servizio Demografico: Rosa Maria Deodato
tel: 0942.74.40.64
email: serv.demografico@comune.roccalumera.me.it

Here is the name of the relevant town official to make your request. Make sure you write in Italian. I would not be surprised if your English letter goes unanswered.

Also, take a look at the LDS free guide to Italian genealogy research: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... cestor.asp.

You may be able to create one of these yourself by finding the relevant records on microfilm through the Family History Libraries run by the Mormons. There are also some good books on Italian genealogy recommended on this board that will give you some guidance.

I will leave the census question to someone else to answer, as I am only aware of more recent census statistics available online.

Go here:

http://www.circolocalabrese.org/resourc ... civile.asp

Then on the drop down menus pick state of the family certificate and it will auto generate for you a letter in Italian.

You may also post your letter in the " Italian language, handwriting , script & translations" section of this forum and hopefully some kind soul will translate it for you.

To have all the family member listed you must request the Certificato di Stato di famiglia storico
