VIZZIO - new and searching for family

Post by Peaches823 » 25 Feb 2008, 05:36

I know the immediate family I have in the US but I am wondering how far back I can find family. I know my great grandfather was Stephano Vizzio registered on Ellis Island and I believe we originated from Palermo, Sicily. Any help to get me started?

Hello and Welcome to the Forum! :D

Since Palermo is both a town and a province you'll need to know
your family's exact town of origin in order to research your
family in Italy.
The Family History Library has many town records on microfilm going
back to the early 1800's.

In order to find out the exact town you could look for several US records
for your g-grandfather:
- original ship manifest
- military registration card
- naturalization records

If he came thru Ellis Island between 1892 & 1924:
Ellis Island one-step

If he was born between 11 Sep 1872 & 12 Sep 1900
his WWI Card may be on (subscription site)

If he was born between 28 Apr 1877 and 16 Feb 1897
his WWII Card may also be on ancestry

If he became a US citizen his record may be found here
Naturalization Indexes and Records

We would be happy to help you look but we would need a bit
more information: his approx birth date, where he lived in the
US, family member info, whatever you can think of.
If you already have his census records they will contain a lot
of clues to locating his other records.
