Hi, maybe we can know more by Carmela/Helena VITO b.1918 circa, and on your genealogic tree
http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/person.asp ... 1947054992
married at Thomas Populardo; the surname spelling is wrong, because PAPPALARDO is right spell; well from this I searched and

Thomas (Gaetano) Pappalardo
Born: 27 Jul 1913
Massachusettes
Died: 30 Dec 1991
San Jose, CA

married at: Helena Vito Pappalardo

Children:
L Pappalardo- Giordano
Living Pappalardo
L Pappalardo- Sharrott
50–
M Pappalardo- Dimanto
1935–1976
I believe that this is Helena VITO daughter of James and Florence Vito
http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/person.asp ... 1505016710

I believe that 2 children are born in Alameda, the other 2 in Santa Clara, so from my search... I believe right family....
and for to go back until Carmela Di Gora (?) I believe that are necessary more steps...
to find the birth record in California of Carmela/Helena VITO and sure it will be also the mother maiden name.... or the marriage record also... if we can know the Florence and Angelina maiden name, we can find more, especially the arrivals... when we find this record it will be easy to know abt the parents...
I know that is a long search, but I searched the ship's manifest under various keys of Di Gora spelling and frankly... the spelling it is wrong .. completely... so it is necessary a deep search... also
I cannot find the death record of Helena PAPPALARDO but I found a:

Carmela PAPPALARDO
Birth Date: 14 Aug 1914
Death Date: 12 Dec 2005
Social Security Number: 547-05-6115
State or Territory Where Number Was Issued: California

Death Residence Localities
ZIP Code: 95123
Localities: San Jose, Santa Clara, California

the birthyear don't match but the death place yes... however it is probable also that Helena living..... but from rumor family, what you know abt italian birtharea of Angelina and Florence....? VITO is a surname of south Italy.... the Di Gora spellig could be also DI JORIO (with J).. it is the same pronounce of DI IORIO in italian language, but I believe is no the same in english... also the other suggestions in the replies could be corrects...

Carmela DI GORA sure decesead enter 1920 and 1930 in Oakland, CA... you have the her death record? I wish help you, but frankly this wrong surname is a mystery... for me...the 1920 census don't help for the spelling... and also it is possible that Di Gora was Carmela maiden name.... good luck, regards, suanj

Ok so I was looking at the census you posted that stated Angelina had a nephew living with her last name Vellione. I wonder if he was the son of Floreance some how. Maybe he was the policemans son. I know she remarried Jim Vito after the policeman was killed. I think I will searc that avenue. I had a conversation once with Aunt Helena (daughter of Floreance)and she mentioned the last name Vellione.

Perahps I found something:

starting from
1910 United States Federal Census
about Joseph Vellione
Name: Joseph Vellione
[Joseph Villione]
Age in 1910: 11
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1899
Birthplace: Italy
Relation to Head of House: Nephew
Father's Birth Place: Italy
Mother's Birth Place: Italy
Home in 1910: Schenectady Ward 2, Schenectady, New York Marital Status: Single
Race: White
Gender: Male
Year of Immigration: 1904
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Silvio Valentine 34
Angeline 24
Joseph Vellione 11

Antony Batiston 31
Lucy Batiston 26
Constantine Batiston 8/12

well the surname Vellione/Villione is sure wrong, so I searched abt the probable right italian spelling: VIGLIONE
and I found:
Giuseppe VIGLIONE born in Petrella, Italy, age 8 in 1906, travelling with Marianna DI TORO age 56 in 1906, also from Petrella and she and the nephew ( or grandson) joining at Silvio VALENTE son in law in 216 front st, Schenectady, NY
http://ellisisland.org/search/shipmanif ... 2254040211

abt Joseph VIGLIONE:

World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918
about Joseph Viglione
Name: Joseph Viglione
City: Schenectady
County: Schenectady
State: New York
Birthplace: Italy

Birth Date: 24 May 1897
Roll: 1818985
DraftBoard: 3

birthtown: Campobasso, Italy; no right: Petrella Tifernina town, Campobasso province, Italy....
DI TORO surname is the maiden name of Marianna/aka Carmela

I believe that from this data will be possible to know more by LDS microfilms
Italy, Campobasso, Petrella Tifernina - Civil registration

Registri dello stato civile, 1809-1910 Petrella Tifernina (Campobasso). Ufficio dello stato civile

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... umns=*,0,0

you can know the birthdate of Marianna/carmela DI TORO, the marriage and the children data....
best regards, suanj
