Birth Records in Italy

Post by bwatenz »

Where would I start looking if I wanted to find a birth record of my ancestors, that were born in Italy. Both Calabria, and Palermo, Sicily

Palermo is both a province and a town, Calabria is a region, and within that region is the province of Reggio Calabria.........in order to send for a birth record, you must know the exact town of birth.

If you do not know the exact town of origin, you can sometimes locate this information by locating ship manifest, and other US records.
If you need help in locating records, provide the ancestors full name, birthdate, spouse name, any known children, and the state in which they lived.......we have members here who are great at locating records of interest.

ok let me start with the one in Calabria. His name is Giovanno Varvaro, born 1874, in Calabria, Italy. Died 1959, New York. Spouse Maiden name Antonia Trufia born 1878, children Anthony. Giovanno served in the Italian army before emmigrating to the USA. It was some war that was fought in Eutiopia, in the late 1800s. I could not find a ship manifest for him. I was told he came through egypt or canada

The other is Frank Vella Born 1898, Palermo, Sicily, died 1984, New York. Spouse Maiden name Carolina Bonanno, born 1889. Children Joseph, Antonina. I could not find a ship manifest on him either.

Hi,

try this new site from the LDS.

There are many Vella's arriving from the port of Palermo, so you may need to wittle your search down by putting Francesco in the forename box, Vella in the Surname box and Palermo as residence.

Ok one thing the Census information. Everything seems to match up but the birth dates for Antonia, and Giovanno. They were 4 years apart. Could it be that the Census listed incorrect information? I could see Antonia, as being annie for short. let me know what you think. If that information is correct then I am pretty sure they come from straiti, Calabria, but how could I know for sure? Can I look up Italian birth records online to see if there was a Antonia, and a Giovanno born there? Thanks

Census records are very often incorrect by several years.
It depended upon who was giving the information to the
enumerator.
Annie is one of several possibilities for nicknames for Antonia.

If everything else matches up - especially the children's names,
you probably have the correct census record.
