Searching for Pappalardo relatives

Post by aredhatlady54 »

Hi everyone,

This is my first post. I was excited to find a specialty site like this one. One of my Pappalardo relatives did research that started with Carmelo Pappalardo b. 28 Oct 1894 likely in Sicily, perhaps in Trecastagni, d. 1958 in Chicago. His wife was Maria Torries b. 16 Apr 1898 likely in Sicily, d. 1975 in Chicago. Their eldest daughter, Rosaria (Sadie) was born in Sicily in 1913. She is my grandmother.

I found a ship's manifest for Carmelo's arrival in NY in Oct 1912 on the America out of Naples. It lists his closest relative as father Salvatore from Trecastagni. The manifest also lists the final destination as Chicago with what appears to be a brother, Cosimo on Broadway.

I did not find a manifest for Maria and Rosaria who arrived in late 1913 or early 1914.

I have been unable thus far to find any records that predate their arrival to the US. Any advice would be appreciated.

:)

Hello Chris and Welcome to the Forum :D !

Are you familiar with the Family History Library (LDS)?
They have microfilmed records of Trecastagni that you can
order and view at your local Family History Center.

Thanks VJ,
I did read some other posts that mentioned that type of research and I will have to try that. I was just wondering if anyone had leads I could follow before I get there.

Wow Valarie,

That's great info! The names of the younger children and the approx birth years match Grandma's sibs. I attached that record to my family tree in ancestry.com. I added the brothers, too. I'll wait to see if I can sort out the parents of the nieces and nephews before I add them.

The ship's manifest appears to match too. You must be quite a whip when in comes to performing the searches. I would not have known to look at an alternate name like Populari.

Thanks for your help! I'll still be searching for earlier ancestors.

BTW, what did you mean about US records? I haven't found much...

Hi Chris!
Thanks! Searching on ancestry.com does take a bit of practice.
Did you find Carmelo's WWI Draft Registration Card & the
family's 1930 US census?

Valarie,

No, I did not find the 1930 census for the family. My grandmother was already married with 1 child in 1930, but I did not find her under her married name either. She married my grandfather Albert Yarious (changed from Iorio or Di Iorio) in 1928. I haven't found much about that family either...

My grandmother just celebrated her 95th birthday and although she's not too well, she still has most of her senses. I plan on calling my Aunt for more info from them.

No I did not find draft cards for Carmelo or his brothers. This gets very complicated, but it sure is fascinating! I've only been doing it for 2 wks and I've lost countless hours of sleep doing research. And that's only on the easy stuff to find!

Thanks again for your help! :D

WWI Draft Registration Cards:

- both at 2334 LaSalle
- Dom. age doesn’t match 1920 census (that happens)
- wives names are on cards

- did not sign card
- birth year is off by a few

1918 Domenico
Domenick Papalardo
29 Sep 1885? (written over) in Catania

1918 Charles
Charles Pappalardo
28 Mar 1882 in Trecastagni, Catania

1917 possible Carmelo
Carmello Papolato
Born Oct ? 1891 in Catania

Valarie,
Thank you!!!! This is great information and it does seem to apply. There was a brother Charles. I have a narrative written by a cousin of my mother's that mentions him. I think there's an Alfred, too. He's in the story. I've now attached that story to Carmelo and Maria. There's no mention of Dominic or Sam, but I'm not ruling them out.

I've been so engrossed in this search that I had forgotten that I did find the 1930 census. I just had not attached it to all the family members. I've done that now.

The draft card for Dominick led me to his family in 1930 and the tree grows more branches.

Today, I also found the Illinois Death Index and found my mother's paternal grandparents death dates under the name Yarious. I still don't know when their names were changed or if I'll be able to trace them back further. This lead me to Anthony (Tony)'s draft card for WWI with an actual birthdate on it. Whoo Hoo!

Chris, congratulations on your progress :D !
(and your taking the time to document your finds  )
Finding your g-grandparents siblings is going to make your
eventual search in their Italian records much easier.
I wish I had known to do that myself when I first started
researching my family.
