Symbolism or fashion?

As a nation state, Italy has emerged only in 1871. Until then the country was politically divided into a large number of independant cities, provinces and islands. The currently available evidences point out to a dominant Etruscan, Greek and Roman cultural influence on today's Italians.

Symbolism or fashion?

Post by clerio »

Hello,

I recently located this picture of my ancestor and who I believe to be his son. I was wondering if anyone can tell me what the red scarf tied to his arm means? I was wondering if it is symbolic or just a fashion trend. Thanks!

I would think it refers to his confirmation since red is the color generally representing that sacrament but I am not sure.

I didn't even think of that, but it does make sense. Thank you for your reply :)

I agree that it represents the sacrament of Confirmation. However, I have a photo of my uncle with his godfather. Could this photo be godfather and godson?

I confirm that I also have several photos of confirmations with the scarf and usually - as said above - the photo is with the godfather/mother

The boy's white tie "confirms" it, to quote a phrase.

He also looks the right age.
