Translation help please?

Post by cefalo2 »

Hi,

Is there anyone that can help me with an English translation for this phrase?

"Io peso e tu posi"

I'm trying to translate an old folklore from my g-mother's comune and this one phrase giving me trouble as I don't think it's to be taken literally.

Quick story line for context -

Residents of a nearby comune broke into my g-mothers church one evening to steal the (rather large) statue of the patron saint. The group of thieves shouldered the statue and began to escape, however with each step it unexplainably became heavier and heavier until they finally had to put it down. When one of the thieves exclaimed how heavy the statue had become, the patron saint is said to have bellowed out "Io peso e tu posi."

Thanks for the help!
