Aurano is a little town under the province of Verbania, Piedmont region:

Thank you Laura, but it said that he died in 1899. In 1900 Josephine Brunel married Alphone Deullis. stating that John Gagliardi had already died.................freespirit

I found several Ellis Island records fro Giovanni Gagliardi's from Aurano, so, we'd need some more info.
I add that Aurano is not only a Commune in Verbania province, but also a hamlet of Gragnano, province of Naples.

I checked the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola italian databases on Ancestry.it, unfortunately they are not complete for Aurano but I found many Gagliardi there and many of them who were born in France or Switzerland possibly because being the village on the italian/Swiss border many people went to france and Switzerland to work. I think that your ancestor was from that area.
Found the 1910 census for Josephine married with Alphonse but wasn't able to find the 1900 census, was she living in Pennsylvania?

I so appreciate all of your help so much. I could not find the 1900 census either. I think before I did list his children with Josephine Brunell and it did say that to of my relatives were born in France. Rose was born there 6-19-1887 and it said Thomas was also October 18, 1893, now my grandfather Joseph listed Italy as his birthdate Oct. 17, 1890 so they must have gone back to Italy and then came to the U.S. I just find it so strange that I cannot find any records on my great grandfather at all in Pennsylvania. I also find it odd that they list VanMeter on the headstone. I called that town and they said vanmeter is only 2 streets, he was not listed on any residence there. again, I deeply appreciate all of your help and time. My grandfather on my mothers side was also from Italy, but that we can deal with another time. I hope to someday make a trip(my dream) to Italy to visit their origins. warmly, freespirit

Unfortunately the image is rather blurry at th bottom; anyway:

"La pace dell'anima di Giovanni Gagliardi fu Giuseppe e di Rosa nato in Aurano il 30 settembre 1864 Morto il 26 maggio xxxx (almost unreadable; Had I to bet, I'd say 1920) in Van Meter PA. xxxx moglie figli xxxx eterna pace pregate (?) per l'anima"

"Peace for the soul of Giovanni Gagliardi of the deceased Giuseppe and of Rosa, born in Aurano on September 30th, 1864, died on May 26th, 1920 (??)in Van Meter. xxxx wife and children. xxxx eternal peace. Pray for his soul."

Just one consideration: it seems that his mother Rosa was still alive (at least by reading how the names of his parents are written). And if he was born in 1864 and actually died in 1920 (can't you get a sharper image?), his mother had to be quite old (let's say, in her 80's?).

I agree with Pippo and after reading the headstone I have no doubt that the correct birth place is Aurano..
