Turrivalignani Marriage Cert Names

Post by peonygirl »

Hello everyone. I am second generation I-A and trying to research my paternal ancestry of which I had little information. I've discovered Antenati - and the wealth of information contained in it. I do not know Italian therefore am hard at work with my Italian-English dictionary and translators. It is slow going. I have the documentation for my grandfather, Guistino Iezzi who married Annina Colangelo, their immigration, and kids. They lived in Alanno and immigrated to New York, moving to Pittsfield, MA. The US side is easy in comparison! I was able to find his parents, Rocco Iezzi who married Maria Nicola Antonia de Angelis -- both were from Turrivalignani. Lastly, I found the marriage certificate for Rocco and Maria which listed their parents! I am amazed. But I can't really grasp the important facts. It looks like Rocco son of deceased Urbano and the living Maria Valentini, both born in Manoppello. Is this correct? I cannot find an Urbano anywhere in the Antenati files. On Maria's side, the parents look like Emidio de Angeles and Raffaele de Meis. But Raffaele is male -- so not sure what this means. If anyone can help me decode this certificate, I would be so grateful! It's a brick wall until I can understand the parents of Rocco and Maria. How exciting! Here is the link:

You have done well!

Record #1
Dated 29 March 1879 in Turrivalignani at the town office at 11 PM before the official...
appeared Rocco Iezzi, farmer born in Manopello, and for over a year resides in Turrivalignani, son of deceased Urbano and of the living Maria Valentini residing in Turrivalignani, [Rocco] is age 28 complete.
AND
Maria Nicola Antonia de Angelis, spinner born in Manoppello, and residing in Turrivalignani, daughter of Emidio [de Angelis] and of Raffaele de Meis, the first (father) a baker, and the second (mother) a spinner, [Maria] is age 27 complete.

Here is the link to the Publication of Banns of marriage... maybe the handwriting is clearer to confirm :-)
http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... 5.jpg.html

NOTE: in the banns, it appears that Rocco is the widower of Maria Giustina Blasioli.

Here is the death act of Maria Giustina Blasioli (#5) in 1870.

On Rocco Iezzi's birth act, his father is clearly URBANO IEZZI (37) and mother MARIA VALENTINI (35)
He was born 10 January 1842

Tessa78 -
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!!! How luxurious to have a full text of what those documents say - I am never sure that what I am interpreting is correct. It just didn't seem that the word Urbano applied to the village but seemed a name as it was in the right area of the document for the name. Thank you for clarifying that.

So I have 3x grandparents - Urbano Iezzi and Maria Valentini; and another grandmother who died before Rocco was born, Maria Giustina Blasioli. I wonder if Rocco's son, my grandfather Guistino, was named after her middle name... On the Maria Nicola's side, looks like Emidio de Angelis is the father, and Raffaele de Meis is the mother. I will not worry about Raffaele seeming to be male -- I guess since many men were named Maria, the reverse can also hold true.

We will see where this leads - eventually I need to look into my maternal great grandparents in Sicily which should be an adventure!
You were very kind to translate - thank you again!

Correction: I have a typo in my first translation of the marrige of Rocco and Maria. The year (and you probably knew this :-) ) is 1870, not 1879.

Thank you Tessa78 - you are fantastic. I just sent a posting but apparently it evaporated, so I will send this one again. Great new links -- it's a lot to digest for sure. I've saved the documents and will study them later. A few questions, though. If grandson Urbano died at age 2, in Sep 1866 and his brother Camillo died at age 6 days in Nov 1866 how is this possible? Very confusing. Disparate ages say they are not twins, but I wonder if one of them was from a previous marriage?
Also, Camillo listed in grandfather Urbano's death certificate looks like Urbano's brother, as he was 38 at the time of U. death, which makes his birth year 1809. So with your good work, I now have Urbano's parents Bartolomeo Iezzi and Agaa Pardi. Wow, my family is expanding!!!! I can see that these names are plausible as when Giustino came to America in 1905 he listed an Agata Iezzi as the destination address (it could be her or it could be someone named after her I guess. All in all, wonderful........

To your original posting, though, my maternal side of the family came from Castrofilippo, Agrigento, Sicily. I need to keep myself focused, so I don't start to confuse lines. It is so easy to do - especially with the naming traditions, names echo all through generations.
I will post some info on them when I feel finished with the Iezzi line. There is some intermingling. My mother married a Yezzi and her sister married his brother, so right here in this generation there was a mixing so can be very intricate. I dare not try to do both families at once!

Urbano was born 1864-65, and in the fall of 1866 Died at age 2 years.
Camillo was born less than a week before he died in 1866.
So they lost two children within 2 months... one was a newborn.

Here is birth of Urbano in July 1865
Rocco Iezzi and Maria Giustina Blasioli are his parents.

Here is birth of Camillo on 16 November 1866
Same parents... (#23)

OK, my confusion. How sad both of the children from Rocco's first wife died so young and so close together. It must have been devastating. Yet, he married Maria Nicola Antonia de Angelis in 1870 and had three more children, Silvino (1875), Angela (1878), and my gf Giustino (1881). Apparently, there is always hope :)

Happy news!

Here is the birth of a daughter, Rosaria, on 22 January 1868, to Rocco Iezzi and Maria Giustina Blasioli.
Notation in column states that she married Carmine de Angelis on 2 April 1892 in Turrivalignani.
Since she was about two years old when her mother died, one can understand why Rocco married so quickly.

Edit to add...

Here is another child, a son, born to the couple in January 1870. I checked the death act for Maria Giustina that I posted above, Both are named on the same page of the death acts.... mother and son (#4 and #5)
#3
Carmine Iezzi

Are you aware of this son, Domenico, born 12 December 1870 to Rocco Iezzi and Maria Nicola D'Angelo (that's the spelling in this record) , [daughter of Emidio]?
Notation of Marriage on 22 June 1893 to Domenica Ceccomancini.

And another son, Raffaele, born 12 April 1873... Same parents.

Thanks, Tessa. Lots of information. There seem to be a lot of Iezzi's in that area - I'll do some searching and see if I can find documentation to back up these folks. Thanks for all of your researching, it is much appreciated.

Let me know if you need these records translated.
The parents of Domenico and Raffaele are the same... Rocco Iezzi and Maria Nicola Antonia di Angelis

Hi. I am rounding up the final bits of my father's ancestry. I was able to find his mother's birth certificate (act) and along with it her marriage notation!! Can you please help me discern the facts? This is what I can get so far:

Name - Annina Colangelo
Place - Alanno, Pescara, Italy
Parents - Gaetano Colangelo and Mart Squarserio
I can't read below that though - it says moglie which I think is wife but usually there is a statement of daughter of....????
Witness (testimony) - Nicola Conali - can't read the other person
Marriage notation on left says:
Annina married Quistino Iezzi in Alanno
Year???
Thanks for any help.

Name - Annina Colangelo
Place - Alanno, Pescara, Italy
Parents - Gaetano Colangelo, age 35, peasant farmer residing in this town; to declare that at 4:30 AM on the 17th of the current month, at the house as Via Callegrande #46, to Marta Squarserio, his wife, weaver, residing with him...
I can't read below that though - it says moglie YES which I think is wife but usually there is a statement of daughter of....???? No, it gives her occupation "tessitrice" (weaver) and that she lives with her husband.
Witness (testimony) - Nicola Canale - can't read the other person Serafino Creati
Marriage notation on left says:
Annina married Giustino Iezzi in Alanno
Year??? on 21 July 1904
Thanks for any help.
