Post by mnaccarato »

Can I please get a translation of this birth record, including all vital information, the witnesses, and the paragraph after the witnesses are stated? Thanks.

Birth Act #68, Angelo Michele Ziccardi:

And would appreciate a cross-check on the below translation.

Thank you both! It looks like the father (declarant) signed the act, so I'm assuming the written portion after the witnesses claims he was literate?

Angela - thank you! I'm unsure that the mother's name is 'Maria Ioanna." Is Ioanna a common surname in the town? I read it as Joanna, and it's stated as 'Maria Joanna' on Emanuela's marriage record when she got married in New York. What are your thoughts?

You are welcome. I am reading Ioanna. We often see spelling errors in American marriage records, so I personally wouldn't trust the marriage record. Maybe another pair of eyes is needed here. While I have researched some towns in the province of Avellino in the past, I'm not au fait with the town of Fontanarosa, so I can't really say whether Ioanna is a common surname there. Sorry. I know it appears there as does the name Iovanna. You might find the following name distribution map interesting: https://www.mappadeicognomi.it/en/index ... a&s=Search

That is helpful. I see that it definitely is possible. I think the best next step would be for me to find the marriage record of Emmanuela's parents to see how it looks spelled on there. I will go to my local FHC soon. Thanks!

Do you realise that most of your records, from 1866 incl. are online here: http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it ... ntanarosa/

I've located another child born to Angiolo and Maria:

1876 Birth No 97: Salvatore Raffaele Ruggiero:
Fontanarosa: 23 November 1876

Angiolo Ruggiero, 36 yo, contadino, living in this town, reported that at 6.30 pm, on 22 November 1876, in via Piazza S. Lucia, No 11, from Maria Ioanna???, his legitimate wife, a contadina, living with him, was born a baby boy, who he presented to me (the official), and gave the name Salvatore Raffaele.
Witnesses to the presentation of the baby and recording of the declaration were:
Gennaro di Prisco, 60 yo, contadino, and Michele Pasquariello, 66 yo, bracciale, both residing in this town. http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it ... 8.jpg.html

The marriage records (matrimoni) don't have all the years, but, between them, the Marriage Banns (pubblicazioni), and the Marriage Attachments (Allegati), hopefully you'll have all the years you need to locate some type of marriage document for this couple that will help clarify things.

Earlier records are at the following links:
1816-1865: (Some years may not be there) http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it ... osa/Morti/

1809-1815: (Some year's may not be there) http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it ... rosa/Nati/

When you locate records that you would like translated, you can just link us to the online record, as I have done for Salvatore Raffaele's Birth Record here.

Angela – I haven't been able to locate the marriage record yet, but I found birth records for two more children! The mother's name in both of these is "Iovanna" which makes more sense to me than "Ioanna." I'm thinking Iovanna is the correct one. One of these children has the same name as Emmanuela, so I'm thinking maybe she died between when she was born and the second Emmanuela was, I will look into that.

Could you please translate the two birth records?

It looks like they were married in 1872. The marriage records for 1872 are not on line but an extract of their marriage record is included amongst the attachments for their marriage.

Angela - Thank you so much!! Wow, this is so great. I think FamilySearch may have the act (it shows the year, so I'll check next time I'm there). I'm so glad we figured out the "Iovanna" surname.
