Riveli Record - was Alfio married?

Post by darkerhorse »

In this 1811 Riveli record from Melilli, Sicily, I'm looking for two word or phrase translations:

in part a
maritali - it looks like marital but there's no record of this person marrying or having children, and four years later, in 1815, his property was inherited by his brother

in part b
carta gratia redimendi - it seems to apply to land tenure - free and clear?

also, when he talks about reaping for a decade does he refer to the past 10 years or the next ten years of taxation?

Has anyone seen this word "maritali" on a Riveli (or other) record before?

My guess is that he managed such land as a husband, as they were the dowry of his wife.
Doesn't his death record mention if he was married?

His brother inherited some (but not all) of this land by 1815. So he must have died between 1811 and 1815. Don't have his death record. No record of any wife or children.

Just to add to what Pippo said about him possibly managing lands as a husband, as they were the dowry of his wife. If that was the case, and the wife died, anything that was part of her dowry reverted back to her family, and not to her husband's family, so his brother could not have inherited land that was part of her dowry.

That's interesting. There seems to have been three properties in total. The term "maritali" appears to apply only to the first property. His bother inherited only the second property. So the third property is a mystery. I know of no other brothers or children who could have inherited it. Of course, a few years transpired so perhaps it had been sold - or the in-laws took possession, if, in fact, he was married.
