ww2 death location query
ww2 death location query
Hi everyone!
My relative died in WW2 after fighting in the Greco-Italian war in Albania, 1941.
He had contracted typhoid fever and also frostbite which led to
the amputation of his legs. But looking at his record it seems to state that he
was taken to the military hospital in Bergamo where he was pronounced dead on
March 17. Is it likely that they would have transported him from Albania to Bergamo in
Northern Italy?? Or am I reading the record wrong??
Adding to the confusion is that a cousin of his was told that he died in Albania.
Any help in clarifying this would be great
Nick

Re: ww2 death location query
I'm really just bumping this for you. I can't clearly read all the words.
I'm reading Bergamo as well but I can't see where it says "military" hospital? I see the words "l'ospedale" and then the next word I can't read because half of it is blotted out. Maybe it's malattia/e or something like that?
I'm understanding he left for Albania on 9 January 1941 and arrived the same day in Valona, Albania. Then he went to the territory declared war on 11 January 1941. Then two months later he has died, and is at the ? hospital in Bergamo?

Re: ww2 death location query
Thanks for posting the full document, Nick. I tried to lighten the document in the hope that I would be able to see what was written under the splotch but no joy really. I don't know whether reversing the document would help. I don't know how to do that. I'll google it and give it a go.
I still can't see that it says a military hospital. After your initial post I read somewhere that during WWII, that in Bergamo, they had to set up extra hospitals there, but I think it was relating to POW's. It was either written by an Australian or a Kiwi. Hopefully it will be clearer to mmogno.
I hope all is well there in Sydney.
Edit to Add: Ignore what I said about reversing the document. My head's in the clouds. You would have to scan the reverse side I think.

@Angela

Sorry for the quality of the document as there are quite a few blotches. So mmogno it does look like he was transferred back to a military hospital in Bergamo Italy...is this what you think? Thanks for the photos and thanks Angela for your efforts and we are all good in Sydney.
Best regards

In 1939 the brigade lost the 255th Infantry regiment and was renamed 24th Infantry Division Pinerolo. This binary division consisted of only two infantry regiments (13th and 14th) and the 18th Field Artillery Regiment. In 1940 the Pinerolo took part in the Italian invasion of France. In January 1941 the division arrived in Albania to stabilize the crumbling Italian front during the Greek counteroffensive in the Greco-Italian War.
On 18 January 1941 the division was in Berat and entered the approaching front near Këlcyrë.
