Help Translating Latin Church Records

Post by sbiondo257 »

I have two records that I can't translate. They're the Baptism and Marriage of my 3rd Great-Grandfather. It'd be really great if someone could also explain to me what key words mean so that I can possible strengthen my own skills at translating!

Wow thank you erudita74! How did you manage to find it?

Also, now that I have an enlarged version, could someone possibly tell me the meaning of the words?

@sbiondo257

When trying to get translations of the records, please copy and paste the url link at the top of the page on which the record appears. This enables the volunteers to enlarge the record to get a proper read of it, plus it enables us to be certain of the specific date on the record. Livio could only tell you that the baptism record you posted was on the 24th, but he couldn't tell you the month and the year. This is because, with multiple church records on a single page, many of these records just use the word eiusdem/ejusdem, which means "of the same kind." It's like using the word "ditto" in English, so the priest or his clerk has not bothered to write the month and year for each record, but is telling us that the month and year are the same as in the preceding record or records. Sometimes, even the number for the day is missing. You may actually have to go back several pages to get the correct date for a specific record. Based on the small section of the baptism record you posted, the volunteers here no way of knowing what month and year it was. We can guess the month was June, since the next record on the page is July 1st, but we have no idea what year the record is. Plus there have been instances in which church records were written out of order. So, while June may be a good guess for your baptism record, it may not be correct.

Thank you everyone! Sorry for not posting the links, many of the records I have were already found by others. I just have pictures of them for the most part. Is there a ID number or something on the records that would allow me to find the original links on Family Search?

The above links are to the church records for Cinisi and the actual baptism record. The date was June 24, 1852. Since he married in 1877, I just used the age of 25 at marriage for him (only as a guess), and then searched baptism records around 25 years earlier than the marriage year. There are some indices as well, but I didn't use them to search for his record. You need to sign into familysearch with a user name and password (of your own choosing) to view the records there.
