anyone familiar with italian military documents?

Post by gennattasio »

My uncle has in his possession a military doc for my ggf that is in very bad shape. He won't take it out of the frame to make a copy, he doesn't speak Italian and I can't go to the East coast right now to photograph it. Over the phone he told me it had my ggf's name, Regio esercito italiano, di matricola classe di l...? 1889, it also had the date 1860 on it. What info. is usually on these records?

It sounds like the equivalent of his 'draft card'.The Italian military call up and registration.

ggf's name,
Regio esercito italiano,
Royal Italian Army

di matricola classe di leva...? 1889,
registration of call up for the class of 1889

Without seeing the document or the knowing the actual wording it is hard to guess where the 1860 figures. But this seems to be the most likely answer.

I was thinking the 1860 could be his birth year. Am hoping his town of origin is on there. I'm missing his exact birth date and commune so this is exciting news. I was hoping to get some input as to what sort of info is on these docs before I made a trip to photograph it.

Before you make the trip, why don't you ask you Uncle or someone there to take it frame and all, and try to copy in a copier where you put in on the plate. Even if the cover doesn't close completly, you should get a pretty good image to look at.

I have my ggf's in front of me: It has his inscription number, his first and last name, name of mother and father, comune of residence, date and place of birth, residence, profession, physicial description (height, hair, eyes, face color, teeth, particular marks, thorax measurements), decision of the draft board on his acceptance/rejection, date of decision. This one is from Benevento. He was not drafted so that is the extent of his info. It is from the 1890's.
