Translation of family tombstone

Post by Rosemary1000 »

I have just started working on our family history and am trying to pice togther the information that my mother can not remember.

This is a photo of my mother's uncle with what I belive is the tombstone of her aunt Novia or it is in honor of the family. My mother's Italian is too rusty to translate what it says.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you
Rosemary

HI Rosemary,

What a beautiful headstone and with a picture.
I will try as my translation is rusty but I am sure Suanj or someone will correct if I am wrong. Please check the numbers, not sure about them all due to the angle of the photo.

Stablie Onofria -------------- Onofria STABLIE
fu Giuseppe ----------- (fu = deceased) of the late Giuseppe
18-10-1903 ----------- date of birth Oct 18, 1903
24-4 -1964 ------------ date of death April 24, 1964
sposo con ----------- spouse with
Affetto ricorda ----------- affectionately remembers
Milotta Giuseppe ------------- Giuseppe MILOTTA (her husband)
fu Antonio ------------ of the deceased Antonio
8-1-1891 -------------- born Jan 8, 1891

From how it is written I believe it means Onofria's father was named Giuseppe and her husband's father was named Antonio. You now have the birth dates of both spouses.

I see this is your first post. Welcome and I am sure you will find lots of help here.

What a beautiful tombstone. If they were all like this, it would make our geneological searches a lot easier.

Thank you so much for translating for me.

This clears up the question we had about if this was my mother's aunt and it is. My mother knew her grandfather's name was Giuseppe but she was not sure of her uncles name and we were confused by there being four names on the stone.

This means so much to me to be able to piece this together.

I am now going to try to seach for records of our family. From my mother's recolection her grandparents and aunts lived in Alcamo.

Thank you for the information about how to get records from Alcamo I looked at the website and see that there is a location not far from my home that I could go to.

Thank you all for the compliments on the headstone. I do feel blessed to have such a great photo.
