Civil records in Northern Italy began in 1872 when unification tookk place but some towns had civil records and some did not depending on the occupying foreign powers. Go to www.comuni.it and write to the town for this information if you plan on obaining documents. Go to www.paginebianche.it and insert your surname of interest in the first line and the town of Ciano in the third line and click CERCA for possible relatives. Either surname may elicit surnames of relatives. Peter

Ciano is now part of the comune (township) of Crocetta del Montello. You could write to Crocetta for Marino's birth record.

You should also ask for the marriage record of Marino and Vittoria, in case they were married in Ciano. If you don't know their marriage date, you can estimate that they were married a year before the birth of their first child.

The address to write to for these records is:

Ufficio di Stato Civile
Comune di Crocetta del Montello
Via S. Andrea 1
31035 Crocetta del Montello (TV)
Italy

Be sure to specify that Marino was born in Ciano, since records for Ciano may be filed separately from records for Crocetta.

There is a web page dedicated to Ciano at:
http://digilander.libero.it/ingridfeltrin/id54.htm

It has some history, photographs and maps.

Good luck with your research,
