Church of St. Nicholas in Accettura, Matera, Basilicata

Post by lcafarel »

I am researching my husband's family (CAFARELLI) from Accettura. My husband's great-grandparents, Vincenzo and Grazia CAFARELLI, arrived in the US from Italy in 1893, accompanied by several children; Vincenzo had come earlier with their eldest son Domenico. I recently found cousins in the US, a daughter and granddaughter of GIULIETTA/GIULIA, one of the children, who have a baptismal record for her from the Church of St. Nicholas in Accettura. I have been trying to find photos and an address for the church, which is mentioned in some online sources as the Cathedral Church, but haven't been able to locate these, although I have found other photos and videos and toured Accettura online via Google Maps (how wonderful!). The listing for the church in the Catholic Directory online appears to be an error, as it links to a province in northern Italy.

Can anyone point me to more information on this church? Thank you!

Thank you, Carmine. Do you know if there's a way to find an email address?

I had visited the Wikipedia site, among many others, and find several other churches mentioned as well. If S. Nicola is the only one on the website you listed, are the others no longer open at all, or just open as historical buildings?

I did take a tour of Accettura via Google Maps, which was very interesting, but could not identify S. Nicola and hope to find more photos of the interior and exterior.

Thanks again.

Here is a picture of the church, linked to the original source:
http://www.stnicholascenter.org/church_ ... sakey=4866

(before long the url will be
http://www.stnicholascenter.org/galleri ... teer/4875/ )

In my experience it is unusual for these churches to have websites or email addresses.

Good luck!
