My paternal grandfather always said he was raised in an orphanage in Cremona, but I recently found his name on a passenger list and he gave Castelleone as his birthplace. I now believe he was telling us he was born in the Province of Cremona, but neglected to add that the town was Castelleone because he thought it would hold no meaning for us. The birth date he used was August 27, 1874.
I'd like to know if there was an orphanage in Castelleone in the late 1800s and, if so, where it's records are now archived.

Don't believe everything Grandpa said. First request a photocopy of his birth record from the town. It might tell you where he was sent (the orphange or a wet nurse locally).
If it was a small town they often sent babies to the closest large city.
