Casalvecchio di Puglia

Post by NickAndreola »

If anyone is looking for family here and have found the records on familysearch, I have made text documents with links to the indexes for each category/year so that you don't have to scroll through 100s of images to find what you want.

So far I've done the rolls that cover 1866-1901---but I intend to eventually do all the rolls.

This is a sample :

INDEX FOR 1896 BIRTH 655-657 (these are the image #'s)
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cc=2043436
INDEX FOR 1896 MARRIAGE 674 PART 1 (PUB)
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cc=2043436
INDEX FOR 1896 MARRIAGE 694-695 PART 2 (ACT)
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cc=2043436
INDEX FOR 1896 DEATH 724-725
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cc=2043436

If you'd like copies of the documents--I'd be happy to send them to you.

Thank you Livio for the added clarity!

The ?'s for #58 & 59 were a reminder for me...Orsogna/Orsogno is a name that is on my list of families tied into mine by marriage. #14 & 22 were clearly ---O and #58 & 59 were clearly ---A

I'm trying to determine if there were two family names so similar in that small town? or which of those two versions is correct? before I cement them into my family tree.

Be aware that the images for the 1869 death index (#'s 1-86) are mixed in with the 1869 marriage index (#s 1-33). The pages are torn out of the book.

See https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cc=2043436 for marriage and page 2 of the death (previous page is page 1 of the death index).

Ian,

Do you also have family from Casalvecchio? If so I'd love to hear more about them!

The link sheets for 1866-1872, 1873-1890, 1891-1901 and 1902-1910 are done.

Every index (including the one Livio corrected above) for the 1866-1910 range has been downloaded, cropped/cleaned up, had a title added, printed and added to the book titled "NICK'S OBSESSION"

I just completed a new-to-me branch on my family tree using these resources (& with help from y'all!) for my Grand Aunt Arcangela https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Andreola-56

While it is very uplifting and exciting to learn the new information, I cannot help but have a heavy heart after seeing even those brief data points for her short life.

While searching through the records for the children of Carmine Andreola & Filomena Simone, I've made a list of 'hits' and 'rule-outs'. Carmine & Filomena were married in 1872 and Carmine died in 1895--so this list only covers that time period. But it may be helpful to save another researcher a bit of time so I've added it here.

Be aware that the 1874 birth index is incomplete. The index goes to #62 --while the actual number of birth records is 92.

So, added to the list above for 1874 are:
#76 Cristina---Pasquale & Maria Luigia Naimo
#89 Michelangelo---Giuseppe & Rosa Maria Calzone

About one month into my project researching my family from Casalvecchio. As expected, I've noted some interaction with Casalnuovo Monterotaro & Castelnuovo della Daunia. There has also been some marriages with folks from towns a little further away:
Coscia's from Carlantino
Garofalo's from Celenza Valfortore
Zumolo's from Pietramontecorvino

I've found a limited number of people from even further away moving into the area:
the Di Marco family from Compolieto, Campobasso, Molise and Antonio Canelli from Fragneto S'Abate, Benevento, Campania who married Maria Giovanna Avocone from San Paolo di Civitate, Foggia, Apulia and then moved to Casalvecchio and had all of their known 14 children there.

With this effort still in its infancy, I've only tried to connect family groups but don't have any real details to add about their lives. If you have family from this area, take a look at the alphabetical listing s here https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category: ... a%2C_Italy and you may see some surnames you're familiar with....only 300 names so far.....more to follow.

Something that becomes really apparent when reviewing the 1866-1910 records available on-line; 1886 was a horrible year! The only thing I've found googling is that there may have been an outbreak of cholera at this time.
Casalvecchio is a small commune. I'm not sure of the accuracy but http://www.italianside.com/puglia/foggi ... genealogy/ notes the population at about 2400 in the 1880's--it is about 2000 today.

The 'morte' indexes typically have a range of 50-100 people- or about 2-4% of the population. In 1886 it jumps to near 300 people or about 12% of the population!

Rounded figures to highlight the spike:
1880 : 115
1881 : 80
1882 : 90
1883 : 100
1884 : 105
1885 : 155
1886 : 290
1887 : 120
1888 : 80
1889 : 50
1890 : 80

Wow! The fabric of the family tapestry in this small town is very tightly woven! I just discovered that my paternal grandfather's mother, Filomena Simone, and his wife's mother, Fioralba Rossacci, were first cousins. Both are descendants of Giuseppantonio Venditti and Arcangela Criasia.

For any of you seeing this that have family that emigrated to Milford, Massachusetts (as mine did) you will note that the family names in the USA morphed into VENDETTI and CREASIA.

I've been working on my Grandfather's (Michele Andreola) ancestors and have just about come to an end of what I'm able to put together from currently available on-line sources--including all the eccellente i consigli ricevuto di tutti di voi!

This is a condensed version of what I've been able to find so far. On the top right--there is a possibility that Donato Andreola is the son of Flavio and Maria Matrangola but I haven't been able to confirm/deny that connection. On the bottom right--the lines continue to Angiolo Longo & Anna Tutolo and to Mercurio Civetta & Angiola Perna.

Just a heads up on a few glitches I've encountered.

In the 1868 birth records there is a gap between #88 and #94

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cc=2043436

The index lists the individuals on #89 - #93 but the page(s) with the acts are not shown.

The same thing occurs In the 1872 birth records --surprisingly with the exact same act #'s....?

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cc=2043436

As of March 15, there are now about 650 people with linked profiles alphabetically listed at
