Can't find records for this town in Catanzaro

Post by harleynut97 » 07 Nov 2019, 21:37

I am searching for records for one of my potential ancestors Angelo Tomaino. I am working off this imigration index that lists his province of last residence as Catanzaro and place of last residence as S. Pietro (Not sure if the "S" stands for San or St.)

But either way when I search archives under Catanzaro I can not find any towns with the name S. Pietro.

1) Is it possible that S. Pietro is under a different name?

2) In the state archives of Catanzaro, there is the town of Catanzaro. Is it possible that S. Pietro is a section of the town of Catanzaro?

Any help would be appreciated in giving me a starting point.

Hey Biff, No he was married in Erie, Pennsylvania. His wifes maiden name is Giuffre. I was going to try and find a birth document that maybe matches the birthdate he has used.

I really can't say for absolutely sure if this my ancestor. I have a naturalization record that says nothing about his home town, only Italy.

Any reason why the town would not be noted in these records?

Hey Marty, I'm afraid this is the wrong person.

I'm seeking a birth record for Angelo Tomaino Born May 14, 1860.

It looks like I am going to have to go to a family history center to access the records for the year he was born. I still don't understand why San Pietro Apostolo is not included in the Antenati site.

Hey Marty, sorry our internet service has been out. I do have his death certificate, along with most things avaiIable since his arrival in the US, I just wish one of them gave his Birth Place.

I hope to get to a family history center next week to search for a birth record.

Your ancestor is a Tomaino that settled in Pennsylvania, so San Pietro Apostolo (CZ) is more plausible than San Pietro a Maida (or a great many other towns, for that matter). That's the good news. The bad news is that, in general, Castle Garden records are incomplete, to the point where their usefulness can be pretty limited.

If you're lucky, you'll find an act of birth in San Pietro. But if you're not, your best bet might be to look for the town of origin through collateral relatives (your ancestor's brothers, nephews or cousins, etc).
