Does Labatia exist?

Post by Monica Fra »

I'm helping someone with their genealogy. Naturalization papers for one woman as well as her sister state they are from "Labatia, Italy". I can't find anything matching that. When looking at their Ellis Island passenger records, they're listed as being from Ferentino, Lazio, Italy.
Researching Narda, Belli, Nardone, Maida, Bandini, Romagnoli, Ferragina & Del Vecchia.

"la badia" (two words and with a d and not a t-but the substitution could be dialectal) means "the abbey." So maybe when the sisters said they lived in Labatia, they were referring to a section of the town of Ferentino where the Monastero di Sant'Antonio Abate is located. The word "abate" means "abbot." I can’t find anything about the part of town where this old monastery is located, but I do see that there have been tours of it. I suggest that you contact the Pro Loco organization in the town, as its members would be familiar with the town’s history (Just trying to think outside the box on this one).

*You can email the pro loco organization through its website below:

I also agree with T that you should upload copies of the documents in your possession for us to review.

@erudita74
Perhaps instead it is "l'Abbazia di S. Maria Maggiore" (=the Abbey of S. Maria Maggiore) in Ferentino.

Maybe it isn't Ferentino but Ferentillo?

And place of birth is Spoleto, Umbria, too.

So, might it be this one? (I was there a few years ago)
