Question on Naturalization

When an immigrant wanted to become a US citizen in the 1900-1940's what proof did they have to provide to show how they entered the US?...... Were documents required? or was providing dates, the ship's name etc enough proof?..... Sal4
Looking for surnames Iasalvatore (Salvatore), Tartaglia, Rosetta, Consola, Di Muccio, Castellano, Montanaro, Dipaolo, Costa, Sansone, Giudicianni and Laudato.
