Devil bridges

Post by Genetick » 02 Sep 2015, 01:29

Hi Board

Having recently returned from Italy I am interested to know what other areas claim to have a "Devils Bridge" (Ponte di Diavolo) such as:
Ascoli Piceno's - Ponte di Cecco or
Borgo a Mozzano's - Ponte della Maddalena

I plan to try to visit as many as possible during my next trip to Italy. Normally there is a story about a local or the bridge builder to accompany the bridge - any such story would be greatly appreciated

cheers

You might be interested in this:

http://www.etruschi.name/vulci/ponte_badia_it.html

It was in the ancient Etruscan town of Vulci, now in the territory of Montalto di Castro, province of Viterbo.
All I know about its name is that it is said that the devil built it in one night, and only the devil could build such a high bridge, and with such a large span.

Hi PippoM

Thanks for the reply. A very nice bridge and by all accounts relatively easy access, I see it has been recently rebuilt (or at least the upper parts).

Its close to a couple of places that are already on my route (Follonica and Grosseto), this is a good start.

Cheers

I was there with my children. So, it's definitely easily accessible.

There are a lot of Ponti del Diavolo in Italy!
Maybe this can help you, but it is only a very short list

Hi Paola

Thanks for the list, I appreciate the time taken to respond. I agree there are many such bridges and not confined to Italy either. Several of these will certainly be within my range. Very interesting bridge at Lanzo Torinese with its offset archway!!
