Search Tricks

Post by vj »

For everyone!
Lots has been written on internet searches
We all have our favorite 'tricks'

Manifests:
My opinion? Dr Steve Morse has the best manifest site:
For Ellis Island: http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/EIDB ... close&LNM=
His 'other pages' have also been a tremendous help.
For Castle Garden (includes Ellis Island up to abt 1912): http://www.stevemorse.org/ellis/cg.html
After doing an exact search (including town) on Ellis Island w/o success,
try dropping information
- shorten names
- eliminate first or last name
- shorten or eliminate town
- use the 'contains' search for first names (works great w/double first names)

If the Ellis Island portion of Dr Morse's site doesn't work, try his other
pages for Castle Garden.
- this page allows the use of a 'contains' search for last names
If you can find the correct manifest on the Castle Garden, the original
may be on the Ellis Island portion of the site, only mis-transcribed.
Take what you now know from Castle Garden, name, date, ship, age, town
and try plugging this info into Ellis Island (eliminating/shortening info as needed)
When all else fails - drop all info on the last name.

Hope this makes sense.

Who's next, ready to share secrets?? vj

Great thread vj...

I think we'll get lots of ggod tips here. Need to think of some of my favourites..right now trying to do a recap of someones family history the old fashion way..with pen and paper.

I like doing this to help me keep track of everything and I fill in info as I go along. Hate bouncing back and forth. I do everything in pencil first and once I confirm I change it to pen..then I enter it into my PC program..

As we just saw on another post ... don't forget trying the names in reverse order. Sometimes they get mixed up when writing the names down or when being entered into the computer.

Need to go thru my links...actually need to organize them as well.....but I had a link to a really good article on web searches and how best to utilize them.......will try and find it to post.

I know it made a big difference in the amount of info I was able to find.....

Sometimes it helps to write the name out in script... then ask yourself which letters can be misinterpreted... for example a "u" can easily look like an "n" or 2 "z's" can look like 2 "r's"... A surname sure as Fazzulo could have easily been transcribed as Farrulo...

I think most of the ship record keepers did a good job writing out all those names... considering....

I think the Ellis transcribers could have used a serious lesson in typography.... or a lesson on the history of type... script..

Luckily for me, I studied typography in college for 3 years, and was also a typesetter for a few... so reading script is loads of laughs not to mention an eyesore
