Help finding vital records - New York to ???

Post by mkaykrista »

Hello, I'm hoping to get some help with connecting ancestors born in early 1800s New York to their home country. Most of my family is Italian and Polish and immigrated to America in the late 1890s. But I'm unsure how to trace back a family that came to America prior to the 1800s.

The family name I'm looking into is Cunningham. From the name, I'm assuming Cunningham is Scottish or English. My earliest-found ancestor, Obadiah Nelson Cunningham, was born around 1813 in Orange County, New York, and died in 1884. Early census records show his parents were born in New York, but no names are listed as the records are from when Obadiah was already married with children.

Can anyone suggest a website or resource that can help me bridge this gap? How early did New York start recording vital records? If early 1800s, I can try to order Obadiah's birth and death record with hope it contains his parents' names.

Thank you to anyone who has suggestions!

Yes, its very possible this is his father. His name seems unique for the times, so I don't think I would come across another Obediah unless it was direct family.
