Re: A wonderful book on Caccuri

That's great, I'm glad I posted here. You'll love the book.

My grandmother and all of her brothers and sisters emigrated from Caccuri to West Virginia too. Her surname was DeBartolo. I have Pignanelli in my family also, but from San Giovanni in Fiore.

Re: Women and surnames

I've always used my maiden name also. I decided to do this long before I discovered that it was the norm for my female ancestors. While I am definitely swimming against the current here in today's midwest, it makes me happy to know that I am following a very old Italian tradition. The very famous Ma...

It's a system that definitly has its merits. I agree, it makes things much easier in genealogy.

Re: Trying to find grandfather's Birthplace in Calabria

Lois, There is a small village near San Giovanni in Fiore called Casino (or Castelsilano). Many of the same families live in this town. In 1849 in Casino a certain Antonio Girimonte and his wife Maria Teresa Gallo had a daughter named Maria Rosa. Then in 1851 the couple had Antonia. Then in 1854, Fi...

Hello Lois,
My ancestry is also from San Giovanni in Fiore and the surrounding villages. Do you know the names of Ignazio's parents?

Re: Guarascio In Or Around Calabria

I have seen the Guarascio name in the San Giovanni in Fiore microfilm. It was a fairly common name there. Many of the San Giovanni families immigrated to West Virginia and Pennsylvania to work in the coal mines. It was a chain immigration. Brothers followed brothers who then invited cousins and so o...

Re: Illegitimate children - socially shunned?

Italysearcher, I have seen the type of situation that you describe often in the villages that I have been researching in Calabira...but I did not know that it went on as late as 1888. Have you seen this kind of situation in the Papal States as late as 1888? Eighteen years after the fall of Rome? I a...

Re: Cacurri Calabria??

Welcome, Biaggio, welcome! I am always happy to meet someone with ancestors from Caccuri. And as a native West Virginian I am happy to meet you also. I am jealous of your trip to Caccuri. I have seen so many beautiful photographs of the town on the internet and in books that I feel as if I know it w...

Re: Illegitimate children - socially shunned?

There is an interesting book on this subject (in English) by a historian named David Kertzer. The title is Sacrificed for Honor: Italian Infant Abandonment and the Politics of Reproductive Control. You can probably find a copy on Amazon.com fairly cheap if you are interested. The short answer to you...
