Re: "Mortie" Gommina??

"Mortie" does not exist as a "classical" name in Italy. And I also think it would hardly be used, as "morte" is "death" in Italian.
So, it must be an anglicization of some Italian name that sounded somehow the same."Gommina" also does not appear in Italian White Pages, but it sounds similar to ...

Re: ??? Prata

Hi,
you will not find civil records dating so far in the past.
You only should look for Church records (and be so luck to get priest's help).
The only historical parish I could find in Prata d'Ansidonia is San Nicola. I will take a look for the address.

Re: Zermani Family from Bardi

Zermani seems to be a surname typically from Emilia, as you can see from www.paginebianche.it (Italian white pages)
and www.cognomix.it (gives a map of surnames)

But nowadays there seem to be no more Zermani's in Bardi.
there are also a lot of Church and civil records from Bardi available on ...

Re: LiPetri's of Menfi

Hi,
I found the ship manifest of their arrival to Ellis Island on July 6th, 1910.
Antonino Li Petri 33 years, and children
Francesco 9
Marti (male) 7
Ignazio 3
leaving nobody in Menfi.
But it also says they were going to join wife and mother Marta Marriano in Brooklyn, 133 Gierge St..
Is this the ...

Re: Aumendo, DiSanto, Accetta families from Salerno

Hi,
I can say just two things:
- Italian women keep their maiden name all of their life
- in Italian White Pages I found surname Aumento; it seems to be very rare (3 occurrences), but one is in Sassano, Vallo di Diano

Re: Help with death cert., please

I agree with Marty about the "S." short for "Santa", but then I don't think it's Oliva, as there's a "i" before last letter (I see the dot on it). It looks more like "lucia". Do you have a list of sezioni?

Re: Confounded by a "J"

It is not exact that they are pronounced in the same way, yet in practice they are substantially equivalent. The "j" is called "long i" as Livio said, so it has a "dragged" sound with respect to that of "i", almost like a "double" i. In XIX century acts, you may often find a "j" as the last letter ...

Re: Came to USA as 'NAPILILLO"

Hi,
you should tell us something more to help our search...for instance, their first names, where they settled, and so on.
"Napilillo" can't be found in Italian white pages; my guess is "Napolillo"; a lot of people with such surname went to USA according to Ellis Island and Castle Garden, the sites ...

Re: Family of Giovanni (John) Tisci

Hi,
I found the manifest in E.I.
It seems to be definitely "Tisci", also because this is a surname that can be found in region Puglia, where Poggio Imperiale is.
In familySearch you can find several Tisci's born in Poggio Imperiale (also one Giovanni, that can't be yours). To see them search Tisci ...

It states he had a scar on his right cheek and neck, that's why he was "rivedibile" (to be examined again).

Re: help with reading/translating death record

The second word seems to be Pesaro, and it might be, as Pesaro is very near to Rimini. The first, To... , must be a hamlet or a commune that changed its name since then, as today there are no communes with a similar spelling. I would say "Torrita", but there's no dot on the possible "i"
