While set in Bergamo (in the north) the film "The Tree of Wooden Clogs" depicts the life of Italian peasants in the late 19th Century... It is in Italian with English subtitles...

I notice that it seems strange that the baby was given to a single wet nurse. So, we might even imagine (but it's just a guess) that she was in reality his mother, who did not want to be mentioned in the act as such.

yes, it means Maria, as it is very common to give names composed with Maria followed by any other. You will often find it written that way, with an "M" and an "a" on top.
