Re: Regaining Italian citizenship after naturalization
You have two possibilities, but unfortunately, neither will work. Regaining citizenship lost to naturalization through residency is, I believe, part of the 1992 citizenship law. This would not have applied to your grandfather because dual citizenship was not permitted before 1992. If your grandfathe...

Re: NY Consulate Timeline
We have been in the queue for five months (papers submitted last September), and our best guess is that we will have to wait at least two years. Sorry.

Re: Where to begin?
Hi Nello, I really have no personal experience with FOIA requests. My response was simply based on reports (on other citizenship forums) by people who have made such requests. One person recently wrote that he was Number 60,000+/- on a list of more than 90,000 requests. I think the problem is the vo...

Re: Where to begin?
Nello, I think you're mistaken about the turnaround time for obtaining a "no record" letter through the FOIA. Since my grandfather did indeed naturalize, I had no reason to make a similar request, but on various forums, posters have reported waits of a year (sometimes longer). This applies...

Re: Is a petition for naturalization good enough?
Nello, If you need the letter of "no record," NARA cannot help you. Since NARA operates through regional facilities, a "no record" letter from one region does not provide proof of non-naturalization (his papers could be on file in another region). What you need to do is just what...

Re: Where to begin?
And your parents can regain their own citizenship (assuming they naturalized) by residing in Italy for one year.

Re: Spelling Discrepancy
No one here can really answer that. The discrepancy is minor, and the NY Consulate tends not to be too picky. On the other hand, it is a discrepancy in a surname, which tends to be a bigger problem than a discrepancy in a given name. You will need to speak to someone at the consulate to confirm.

Re: Naturalization Document Question
Nello is correct, and unfortunately the SF consulate seems a lot more demanding than some of the others. However, you have no choice and must deal with the consulate in your jurisdiction. Since you know your grandfather did naturalize, his certificate is likely on file. That's the good news. The bad...

Re: Naturalization Document Question
Just a quick note. If you're looking through the archives (NARA), you need to make your request in the district in which the naturalization took place. The Archives only maintain regional records.

Re: Naturalization Document Question
You may want to check with the SF consulate. If they accept the Oath as do other consulates, it will save you a great deal of time.

Re: Declaration of Intent Sufficient?
It's scary that they are getting so busy. Last year you could get an appointment within a month. They brought in new people in September so I thought things would move more quickly. Apparently not.
Good luck with documents and appointment.

Re: How to pay for doc from Italy
Nello, I used a service (see my response to etrooney on the other thread). It's a bit more costly but much easier. You might want to check on rates.
