Re: Surnames shortened by the US.

Name on Ellis Island says Froil. http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup_weif_5a.asp?src=%2Fcgi%2Dbin%2Ftif2gif%2Eexe%3FT%3D%5C%5C%5C%5C192%2E168%2E100%2E11%5C%5Cimages%5C%5CM237%2D0669%5C%5CM237%2D06690006%2ETIF%26S%3D%2E...

Re: De Cellis
I think vj is correct about the 1900 census, but dates are inconsistent on immigration.
If Vito immigrated 1892 or later, records will be at Ellis Island. Earlier records are at Castle Garden, but early manifests don't give much info.

Hi, vj
Sounds like the right family, but the census info doesn't fit regarding the birth of !st child.

Re: Dilemma?
I may be wrong, but if I am someone here will be sure to correct me..but.. Since Italy is a Catholic country, socially and religiously the child of the church marriage would be legitimate. The civil marriage later to another man would not be sanctioned by the church. So the scandal would be the 2nd ...

Re: Giacomo Forlenza - Contursi
Hi and welcome to the forum,
Contursi is not a big town and it seems like everyone is interrelated. Have you seen this post? It is amazing! This must be more of your family.

Re: Any Hints on Maiden Names
That was a stroke of good luck. Children take the name of the father. However, sometimes on ship's manifests if mother and minor children are travelling together they show up under mother's name. Re: Any Hints on Maiden Names
Women in Italy keep their maiden names. If you look for ship's manifest you will find maiden names. if you are talking about women born in US, it is difficult unless census has parents or siblings living with them.
