Thanks, Tessa. Not sure where the name came from as I haven't been able to locate any other family members with that name.

Question regarding first name of ancestor

On the 1905 New York State census for James Alia (my MGGF), there is a son by the first name of Fioreavanto (Floreavanto) listed under James' name. I never heard of this son before. Is this a common first name? Or is it a terrible misspelling? Thanks. :)

Re: Frustrated and Confused. Any suggestions?

ck2007, hang in there! I've been researching my Italian side of the family since 2007 and it wasn't until just recently (last few months) I learned the surname of my MGGM. Genealogy has taught me a valuable lesson in patience as it can literally make me want to pull my hair out!!! Don't give up! Ste...

Just wanted to bring this post to the top in the hopes that someone can help me locate an earlier ship manifest (or any other information) on Maria Grigora coming to the US before 1901. Thanks! :-)

Re: Virgola (?spelling) surname

I found a 1900 New York State census showing Maria and Vincenzo living in Manhattan. However, when I look at the ship manifest from February 12, 1901 when Maria first came to America (and the only manifest I'm able to find for her), it states she was never in the US before this date. If she was here...

Hi Clara, thanks for the links. :-) I'd actually found the same links and had looked those over before my original post. I'm particularly interested in seeing if anyone on this board has the surname in their ancestry. :-)

Re: Virgola (?spelling) surname

I got a feeling that Vincenzo Ali and Maria Grigora were married after 1903 went through the marriage indexes 1883-1903 of Caulonia didn't see them Marty Their first child, Giovannina, was born on Feb. 17, 1903. Just curious as to why you think they married after 1903 (other than not being able to ...

Re: Virgola (?spelling) surname

Yes, Maria married Vincenzo before traveling to America. According to the same manifest, she had never been in America before her arrival date of Feb. 12, 1901. Also, Domenico Ali was Vincenzo's son by his first marriage to a different Maria. She must have passed and their son traveled with Teresa a...

I'm back! And, after connecting with a few very helpful people as well as having the unforgettable opportunity of visiting the birthplace of my maternal great grandfather, I was thrilled to find out that my MGGM's surname was Grigora! She was born on June 11, 1874 in Caulonia. Her last name has elud...
