Re: Civil officials "bending" the truth?
Fano didn't begin civil records until 1861 so you are looking at copies of parish records submitted to the civil authorities. Errors could be made at the original writing (a mother wasn't always present at the baptism) or at any of the copies made, first for the civil authorities and again at the ti...

Re: Trying to find a name change document
He could not have 'taken' their family name without the father or mother formally 'recognising' him as their child. This would be noted on the birth record. If he took their surname after they arrived in America this is another story since in America you can be known by any name as long as its not f...

Re: Searching for RUOTOLO birth/marriage/census records in Napoli, Italia in later 1800s.
Records for Naples after 1865 are not yet on line (and there is not indication of when this will happen). Ruotolo is a common surname in the south so you will need to do more research on the town of origin. Naples was a common port of departure so you cannot count on that being the town of birth. Th...

Re: were middle names common/documented in late 1800s?
I answered this in your other post but, yes, middle names were always recorded in official documents. All men were included in the Lista di Leva but not all had to serve so if you are search Foglio matricolare you might not find him. In fact Sicilians had an exemption for a period of time.

Re: 1876 Palermo Uff. 2 record not found
In my experience Palermo staff do not like digging around these old records. However these records appear to be on line (Tribunale) (I didn't find it) or at a Family History Centre where you need to go in person.

It may well be true but it does say that most Ceita were of 'no account' (squittini). There are no Ceita in today's phone book. You will need to find the town of origin to move ahead.

Start with Ellisisland.org to confirm the town of origin, then family search or antenati should be able to give you the rest.
