Re: Looking for help on Genardo surname

Is this your James? http://s30.postimg.org/624lxd3gd/jamesgenardo.jpg (click to expand) If so, consider spending $10 to get a copy of his naturalization records from the National Archives. These should include the name of the ship and date when he arrived in the US and the full name which he travele...

Re: Looking for help on Genardo surname

Julia, can you tell us more about James Genardo?

Where did he reside in the US?

What was his wife's name?

Children's names and birth years?

Re: Looking for help on Genardo surname

You can find 16 pages of "G" surnames here http://www.cognomix.it/origine-cognomi-italiani.php?l=g - The Ge's begin on page 5. This list is almost certainly not exhaustive, but a good representation. You can judge the prevalence of a given surname here http://www.gens.info/italia/it/turism...

Re: Looking for help on Genardo surname

James is often an Americanization of Vincenzo.

The surname Genardo does not seen to exist in modern Italy though there is currently a single listing in the Italian telephone directory for Gennardo with two n's.

"De Nardo" is a real possibility however unlikely that may seem.

Re: who paid for passage on ship manifests

Here you can find digitized copies of Italy's La Stampa newspaper, 1867 - 2005. With some effort it should be possible to find advertisements for steamship travel to the US. http://www.archiviolastampa.it/component/option,com_lastampa/task,ricerche/Itemid,3/ And here is L'Unità, 1924 - 2008: http://...

Re: I think this is my 3rd gr grandmother

FamilySearch.org used to have several great articles on deciphering Italian records and handwriting; the new website makes it extremely difficult to find these now, but you might try searching the blog and/or wiki. Also, if you are seriously researching Italian records, be on the lookout for a copy ...

Re: who paid for passage on ship manifests

I found this 1906 article using the search tool at NYTIMES.COM. It would appear that the full steerage fare at the time was $30 New York -> Naples. http://s9.postimg.org/5gx25gxdn/Capture.jpg http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=9A0DE3D61F3EE733A25755C2A96F9C946797D6CF Some might recall...

Re: Recognition Makes You An Italian Citizen

This is both true and misleading. You are an Italian citizen (or able to claim such) if your father was an Italian citizen at the time of your birth or, if born on or after January 1, 1948, your mother was an Italian citizen at the time of your birth (making allowances for the fact that the 1948 rul...

Re: Reached a dead-end finding info on great great grandfath

I also found a WWI registration card to Carmine De Monico -- Unfortunately it is poor quality and very hard to read what most of it says. The date of birth appears to be 1882 though (contradicting the WWII registration document). The National Archives has some 24,000,000 original WWI draft registra...

Something else of interest: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/26JK-FM3

It would be helpful if you told us what info you already have so that we don't offer repetitive results.

Re: Do I qualify for italian citizenship?

Then barring any quirks in Argentinian law, you should be good to go. Your great-grandfather still had his Italian citizenship at the time your grandmother was born, therefore she acquired Italian citizenship at birth. Presuming that she did nothing to disavow her Italian citizenship (highly unlikel...

Re: Do I qualify for italian citizenship?

The gist of this is as follows: 1) Was your father (knowingly or unknowingly) an Italian citizen at the time of your birth? To answer this, you must know: 2) Was your father born on or after January 1, 1948 AND was your grandmother an Italian citizen at the time of your father's birth? To answer thi...
