A Tricky Great Grandfather

Post by gaylamity »

Hello there! I'm looking for more information about my great-grandfather and his parents/family in Italy. I've been stuck on him for quite some time now. Currently, the only knowledge I have is that he passed away in New Jersey around 1940 and that he immigrated from Carpino, Puglia/Apulia in 1907 around the age of 21. On his Ellis Island immigration record, his name is listed as "Teodoro Indelli". However, on his headstone, his name is displayed as "Diodore Intelli". This man has been a serious roadblock for a few years now, as he passed away when my grandfather and his siblings were very young and anyone who would have more information has passed away as well, so I would appreciate any help I could get!

You may already know about this: the Nov. 3, 1986 issue of the Jersey Journal has an obituary for Theresa (DeMonte) Intelli. The newspaper article lists her deceased husband's name as Theodore.

The Europa manifest (#15) lists his age as 24 (vs 21) and makes birth in 1883 more solid... I can't quite make out his destination location....? https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... 3AJXVW-WJZ

This is likely his JANUARY 10, 1883 birth record #11 as Teodoro Indelli.....https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cc=2043436

You'll need better eyes than mine to interpret what was going on with Teodoro's birth beyond his mother didn't want to give her name.......

His destination on the manifest looks like "Carrie, PA" - possibly referring to the Carrie Blast Furnace in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area.

As to the birth act... the declaration and presentation of the birth was made by Lucia Marrocchella, 60yo midwife who declared that the mother wished to remain unnamed. Upon request, the official released the child to the care of the delcarant.
