Need help building my family tree

Post by gbatts »

I am trying to find out/confirm where my great great great grandparents came from and what the original spelling of the family name is.

My roadblock is the records were lost in 1906 earthquake/fire in San Francisco. What I have is the following:

Their names were Joseph (Giuseppe?) and Louisa Batteate. Loiusa's maiden name is Costello. If found a death announcement in the local paper that says Louisa died in 1887 at the age of 43 making birthdate ~1844, possibly in Genoa. I found a spelling of Battiati in a SF phone directory. They had a son named Anton Salvador who according to his petition for naturalization in 1924 says he was born in Genoa on June 13, 1872. It does not give a date for when he left Genoa, but says they arrived in SF in 1874, on the vessel San Francisco.

This conflicts with what Anton's brother Nicholas (my great great grandfather) wrote in the 1900 census. Nicholas says he (Nicholas) was born in 1870 in Brazil (family lore says it was on the boat), and landed in SF in 1871.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Are there some resources you could point me to?

Thank you in advance.

Possible Antoine Castello (mispelt) was Louisa's brother....
Maybe Louisa real name was Regina? Do you know if Nicholas had siblings?

I believe the Family (Nicholas's parents) emigrated for first in South America, possibly Uruguay (my huband's grandfather did the same), then came back to Italy (Antohny was born in Italy on 1874 more or less) just for a few years or less and then re-emigrated to North America....
However if the right spell of the surname is Battiato is not a ligurian surname :?
in my opinion Louise's lastname was Castelli

Yes, Peter, it's possible but I'm sure they are of sicilian origin...they possibly emigrated from Sicily to North of Italy in the 1960/70...

Battiato is a sicilian surname:

BATTIATA
BATTIATI
BATTIATO
