SUBSCRIPTIONS

Post by porrettoc »

I have been helped by kind folks today and I see where I need to subscribe to a commercial site as I can't find any free sites with information. They all lead to sites like ancestry.com who invite you to join for a fee.

Can anyone suggest a site that isn't too expensive for a retired old man on a fixed income? And which is the best for the money.

Thanks,

Dear Charlie I missed out on your inquiries so just what do you want to find out free of charge? There are some websites that tsake you so far and then you need to go elsewhere to find out more and then maybe somewhere else. =Peter=

Charlie,

Many library's have free in library access to Ancestry.com and with a library card you can access Heritage Quest from your home. Check out your local library. If they do not have access, will a neighboring library give you access with your local library card. Many will share services.

Hi Charlie..

There are a lot of free sites out there but you do have to hunt them down. Ancestry is great because it's like one stop shopping but sometimes it's just as much fun googling sites.

You may also want to try some of this sites:

http://www.familysearch.org

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html

http://www.archives.gov/genealogy/about ... earch.html

http://www.ellisisland.org

http://www.stevemorse.org

http://www.gentedimareitaliangenealogy. ... urces.html

http://www.gentedimareitaliangenealogy. ... abria.html

And there are so many more..just take your time and if you should need something that you can't find, please feel free to post it here and one of our members will help you!

Hope this helps a bit.

Hi Charlie.
I've done most of my recent research using Ancestry (the UK version) after trying all over the place for free sites. I thought it was pricey, but found such a mass of information, and so quickly, that I think it was worth subscribing for a couple of months. I did it when I was well organised and knew what I wanted to find, and had plenty of time set aside to be on the computer several hours a day. Then I cancelled the monthly subscription. Now I use it on a pay per view basis which is a very expensive option, but handy if you have the odd thing to look at. And I have copies of all the documents saved to my computer, so make sure you know how to right click on a document and keep it even if you want to go back later and check it's the right one, rather than just storing them on the website.
Good luck!
Searching for my great x3 grandfather Raffaele CIACCIA, also known as Raphael/Ralph CHURCH. He was born in Napoli around 1792 and arrived in London before 1812 with his brother Saverio CIACCIA, where they married sisters Ann and Jane FURNEAUX. He switched between CHURCH and CIACCIA all his life, which has made it difficult enough to pin him down. I want to find his origin in Italy.
