De Veito & Vaccaro

Post by juviemom »

Hi everyone and thanks for allowing me to participate.
I am researching my husbands maternal side of the family.
We begin with his mother ~ Eleanor Vaccaro-Demps-Barry-Rodgers. She was born in 1927 in Chicago. We have not been able to locate her birth certificate, but her sister Carmella Vaccaro-Finn's birth certificate gave us leads.
The mother of Carmella was Rose De Veito who was 17 in 1924 when Carmella was born in Chicago, Il. The father is listed as Emil Vaccaro. Emil was born in London and Rose was born in Italy (birth cert. information).

My husband remembers that Rose also used the last name Coccimiglio; and the only reference we find to a Rose Coccimiglio is the 1920 census where she is shown with a husband and 5 children in New York. We do know that Carmella, Eleanor and another child Dominic were all placed into a Catholic orphanage but we can find no record of this and we do believe that it was during the 1930 census.

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas for where I can continue this search. We have not found where the parents entered the US. We cannot locate a 1930 census for Emil or Rose (under names Vaccaro, De Veito or Coccimiglio). I'm stuck and hoping for your wonderful insight for this poor miserable researcher!! :D

Any and all suggestions or help is most apprecaited.

Regards,

Bobbi Pohlman-Rodgers

Hey Bobbi :D ,
I'm so glad we could help.
Any other clues that may help in the search for records?
Do you know why the children were in an orphanage? (sometimes it was economic)
What happened to son Dominic.
Thank you,
Valarie

Here's an interesting record of a border crossing - no way (yet) to know if it's your Emil:

We don't have any further information on Dominic as of yet. Emil was born in London as per Carmella's birth certificate. So I'm not sure if the information you provided is the same Emil - but I certainly will keep track of it in my database.
We are not sure why the girls were placed in the orphanage - whether it was economic, death of father, or some other reason. However, Rose did return at a later date and was reunited with the girls for the rest of her life. My husband remembers her but we are unsure where she died and what name she died under. As we understand, there were at least two marriages but there could have been more (Vaccaro & Coccimiglio).
I do appreciate all the information you have provided. I did do some research on the orphanage information and found that it originated as a home for unwed mothers - which of course lends a whole new aspect of research. But we are fairly sure both girls had the same father - based upon their maiden names - but of course there is no guarantee.
I'll keep you all posted on further information that we find.
Many blessings,
Bobbi

Bobbi,
you told that Rose was born in Italy....
Also from the 1930 census that Vj :D found, we can see that Carmela and Eleonor's mother was born in Italy...
She was 17 on 1924 so more or less her birth year was 1907...

What about this 1921 arrival manifest for a Rosina De Vita, age 15 (approx birth year 1906), last residence in Italy and place of birth Senerchia :!: Avellino Province - Campania region, travelling with her sister Maria Michela age 20, joining their father Giovanni De Vita living in Chicago on 906 South Irving Avenue ??

Pink 67 - Wow - you are really dedicated to helping! I love getting this info because it makes me think. Here goes answers to you:
1. Domineco Vaccaro, born 1925: We have looked at this, but my husband states that this Domineco was the youngest of the children as he remembers it. I found another born in 1933, but found that he had different parents. As we did not find Domineco in the orphanage in 1930 it probably is not him (they wouldn't have dropped off the girls and not the boys ~ would they?). I'll purchase the record from Chicago (instant access) and see

2. Carmello Vaccaro, born 1924: This is our Carmello who was also in the orphanage. We have her birth cert. and that is where we obtained the father's name and the mother's maiden. It also shows where the parents were born ~ London and Italy respectively.

3. Rose Coccimiglio, SSDI: We do not believe that this is our Rose. Other records I have found on her (based on DOB and residence) indicate other children that our Rose did not have.

4. Carmello, manifest: Not our Carmello, she wasn't born in 1913.

The manifest information I will further look into. After I read through it a few times it seems possible????

You have been a true blessing, Laura.

Thanks!!!!!

edit to make corrections...
Bobbi,
thank you for the update, it's very helpful....
4. Carmello, manifest: Not our Carmello, she wasn't born in 1913.
about this arrival manifest I believe this Carmela (born on 1878 more or less) could have been Emilio/Emidio/Amedio Vaccaro's mother....
All this makes sense because Rose and Emil first daughter was named after her, and Domenico was named after Carmela's husband (Emilio/Emiod's fahter) Domenico Vaccaro...
Emiddio (then corrected in Amiddia), male, age 11, born in Bedford England
I believe possible this is Emilio... Rose's husband...

Of course these are just my opinions :D

Just checked Domineco born 1925. Not our child. Facts just don't add up - 1. Father name different
2. Father age is younger than known age in 1924
3. Father occupation completely different
4. Mother age is same as prior one 13 mos. earlier

:( Will begin searching again.

As he was the youngest - again confirmed with husband - he would have had to have been born after 1927 (birth year of Eleanor) and it is possible there was a different father - Coccimiglio. Will do that route now.

Thanks again for help!

Hello Bobbi :D !

Laura and I have been looking at the family on the 1913 manifest that Laura found.
The coincidences are starting to pile up so we're going to post a few records to see what you think.

Valarie
---

probably the same family from Laura's 1913 manifest find

Domenico & Carmella with their 1st 2 children (lined off 1913 manifest)

1901 England Census

Civil parish: Bedford St Paul
Ecclesiastical parish: Bedford Holy Trinity
Town: Bedford
County/Island: Bedfordshire

- organ grinder, working on own account
wife Emily Vaccaro 21, abt 1880 IT
son Frank Vaccaro 2, abt 1899 London
daughter Amelia Vaccaro 2 weeks, abt 1901 Bedford
---

Here are a few of the birth records for children on the manifest.
Amidis/Amidio could be Emil - he probably 'americanized' his name

FreeBMD. England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915

Name: Amidis Vaccaro

Name: Rose Vaccaro
Year of Registration: 1903

Possible 1920 census for Domenico Vaccaro.... Emilio/Emidio/Amedeo's father:

1920 United States Federal Census
about Domenick Vaccaro
Name: Domenick Vaccaro
Home in 1920: Chicago Ward 19, Cook (Chicago), Illinois
Age: 46 years
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1874
Birthplace: Italy
Relation to Head of House: Head
Father's Birth Place: Italy
Mother's Birth Place: Italy
Marital Status: Widow
Race: White
Sex: Male
Home owned: Rent
Year of Immigration: 1913
Able to read: No
Able to Write: No
Image: 22
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Domenick Vaccaro 46 head, widower, born in IT, immigr. year 1913
Carlo Vaccaro 17 son, born in IT, immigr. year 1913
Charles Vaccaro 15 son, born in IT, immigr. year 1913

image:
[img=http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/3731 ... ens.th.jpg]

There some incongruences:

Carlo the first son... it's impossible he was named like his younger brother (Carlo is the italian version for Charles), so, possible it was a mistake of the census taker ... i believe this boy was Emilio/Emidio/Amedeo

The boys are listed as born in Italy, maybe Domenico (the father) stated this information in a wrong way...

I found another interesting record:

http://www.ilsos.gov/GenealogyMWeb/IDPH ... rchServlet

VACCARO EMEDIO M/W UNK 6026294 1925-10-07 COOK CHICAGO 25-10-09

Maybe this is the reason you're not finding Eleonor and Domenico's birth certificates.... Maybe they weren't Emilio/Emidio's child?

Also, maybe this is the death date for Carmela vaccaro, Emilio/Emidio's mother:

VACCARO, CARMELA 1914-02-07 CHICAGO 35 YR U 00029782 COOK
