I'm Searching for my Nonna....

Post by tmasci »

Hello, my name is Anthony Masci. I am trying to do a family search but naturally, I hit a brick wall (again!). I cannot find any information that my grandmother landed on ellis island when i know she did. i can find my grandfather's arrival but nothing on this wife.

Her name is Assunta (Marigliani) Masci. Born Aug 15, 1903 in Terrancia, Italy. Died, November 18, 1961 in Cambridge MA. Mother's name, Virginia Sodi and father Silviani Marigliani. The story goes that her husband,Agostino Masci came to America first, then called for Assunta to follow where they resided on Harding Street Cambridge.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Just in case you weren't aware, married Italian women always (well, 99.9% of the time) appear on manifests under their maiden name. In fact, Italian women, then and now, are always known by their maiden name for legal purposes; it is the name on their passports, on their identity cards, on their tax returns, etc.

So, if you have been looking for "Assunta Masci", stop that! and start looking for "Assunta Marigliani" instead.

Thank you Biff, this info is great. Is there another database that you are searching in? I still couldn't find this info at EllisIsland.org.....

In point of fact, ellisisland.org only handles manifests for ships that docked in - guess where! - Ellis Island, NY.

It comes as a surprise to many new researchers that immigrants entered the US at many different ports; Italians in particular were as likely to enter through Boston (as Assunta Murigliani apparently did) as through Ellis Island.

Although it is a pay site, ancestry.com probably has the largest selection of records available.
