Need help finding information about my great grandma

Post by SChiarini »

Hi,

I seemed to have hit a brick wall when trying to find a birth certificate for my Great Grandma! It seems that no one in my family knows exactly where she was born , they *think* it is Bari, where my great grandfather was also born, however no one is 100% sure.

I have looked all over - ancestry.com, footnote.com, ellisisland.org, and even castle garden's website. I have come up with nothing! Her death certificate only states that she is from Italy. I have her Naturalization papers - however that does not show what town in Italy she is born in.

I also wrote to two communes in Bari to search for a birth certificate but I have not received a response yet.

Her name is Angelina (Lena/Angeline/Angela) Ferrante. She lived in Brooklyn, NY. Her birthday is Nov 11, 1889. I'm not sure what year she came over here either...

If anyone knows another way to search I would appreciate it very much!

I do no want to overlook the obvious. So Ferrante is her maiden name and you do not say when she died nor where she went to live when she first came to the USA (I mean Boston, New Orleans, Philadelphia what section of the usa did she live in. Where was she married??????? What does family stories about the family say about the Feast celebrated in their home town in Provincia di Bari??(similar to Madonna di qua si sana=Toritto)

Get back to us as soon as you can with the good news. =Peter=

Hi Peter

Ferrante was her maiden name, Proscia was her married name. I believe she lived in Brooklyn, New York all her life. She was married in Mary Help of Christians' Church- 440 East 12th St. New York, New York on October 11, 1914. Unfortunately my grandmother has alzheimer's and doesn't remember anything. My father is not much help either :( All he really remembers is Bari.. I know her father's name was Vito Ferrante and mothers name was Bernadette Paccione. I tried doing searches on them as well but no luck.

Hi!
Is this the correct 1933 Petition for Naturalization for your g-grandmother Angeline Ferrante Proscia?
(Birth date doesn't match, states 1 Oct 1896)
As suanj :D found above, her birth location is Toritto.
Children's names appear to match the 1930 census found here
http://italiangenealogy.tardio.com/Foru ... 14509.html
It states that her husband Francesco filed his Declaration of Intention in 1929, died in 1932.

I just saw all your posts now...after hours of trying to call different relatives and search the internet. :) The slight difference in names is what confused me, and the incorrect birthdays!

You are all so wonderful and incredibly helpful!

However, like Suanj said, I do not think I can qualify for dual citizenship - since my GGmother renounced her italian citizenship -- although I read somewhere that since the children were born in American- they were already American citizens so they never had to renounce their Italian citizenship?

Still not 100% sure I do not qualify - I'm trying to stay hopeful :)

the children born in USA are US citizens, but they have also the citizenship of parents, if the parents no renounced ...
instead if the parents with all children renouncing, well also the children becoming US citizens totally and they cannot transmit the Italian citizenship to their children when they are born....
pratically: who born from a mother or a father that a renounced to italian citizenship, well it cannot be elegible...

Hi all!

I think I hit a brick wall again! I sent away 3 months ago for a birth certificate for my great grandmother - mentioned above- to Toritto - I then wrote a follow up letter since it is March and I still haven't heard anything.

To make the long story short I received an email this morning basically saying they have NO records of an Angelina Ferrante born in Toritto during the dates I gave them.

Does anyone know if the commune can check their records based on a persons name since I dont have an exact date of birth?

thanks!
