Iam trying to locate the town or village of my greatgrand father, i have done all the research i can in america i have a copy of the death certificate and other records but it just says naples italy, it was a very long time ago and most of the relatives have passed away, i have been trying to locate this town for over 25 years with no luck i was told by aunts and uncles that the town was caserta,maddaloni,nola,benevento,san clemente
melizzano but could not find it on micro film. the information i have is

Antonio maddaloni born 1851
Giuseppa siviglia wife born 1854
Gaetano maddaloni son born 17 feb 1881
Angelina maddaloni daughter born 2 dec 1885
They came to america about feb 1888

I found that both the surnames( Maddaloni and Siviglia) was in Melizzano surely.. but only by some obituary of Antonio or Josephine, or the italian children, it could be possible to know more; also if Gaetano was naturalized.... from declaration of intention.... but seeming that no many data came up abt that on ancestry...

thanks for that information, I had the 1900 census ,but how did you get the year of marriage? i also have a copy of the petition it does not have much information, iam going to try and view the micro film of melizzano

When you get to the Mormon family history library and veiow the microfilms for Melizzano bring along a book Discovering Your Italian Ancestors by Lynn Nelson since this is a companion book for the films you will find it very helpful. =Peter=

Ok I picked up the book, discovering your Italian Ancestors, it was very helpful. The problem I am having is the films for Melizzano only go up to 1860. Gaetano was born in February of 1881. I had to jump and look for Antonio Maddaloni, I found one Antonio Maddaloni, born in April of 1851. This is not Gaetano's father. Is there anyway to trace records from 1881?
I am running into a roadblock again. Can anyone give me advice?
I still have the Melizzano tape available for a couple of more weeks.

Since Melizzano appears to be a strong possibility, have you tried simply writing to the stato civile office and requesting birth certificates? The service is nearly always provided free of charge and depending upon the comune can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months.

Civil records are kept starting 1870, so you'd better ask for Gaetano's birth act of 1881
