Virgalito emigration from Italy

Post by oilman19 »

According to 1930 census:
Joseph Virgalito-head of household
age 46
born in Italy
all children born in New York
arrived 1907
Wife-Concetta (Unknown surname)
arrived 1915
1st child born abt 1916
marriage location and date not known

I looked for his passage under Giuseppe for a given name but found nothing. I know they raised their family in Rome, Oneida, NY. If anyone can determine if the name Vergalito is the accurate surname, his or her passage, and their origin, I would be so grateful.

I believe that must be the manifest I was seeking. Thank you Valarie (and Biff) for such a prompt response. I looked on Ancestry this afternoon at the public library but had no success. You guys are good.

Is it possible Giuseppe traveled back to Italy to get married? His 1906 manifest indicated he was single. Also, if the census record is correct, they didn't have time to get married or have a baby in 1915. Does anyone see any clues I might be missing?

Thanks,

Jim

It looks like they had additional children that may not have survived childhood (comparing 1920 census vs 1930 census). How sad.
I will continue to try to find out what happened between Giuseppe's emigration to U.S. in 1906 and the beginning of his family in 1915. I did note that the 1920 census indicated Concetta's emigration was in 1911. This would make much more sense.
Thank you again for your help.

Laura,
You are amazing. I was looking for that record on Ancestry in our public library when I checked my mail to discover you had already found it. I wasn't creative enough to try a double (L) in the name. This may make it easier for me to find more of the children's records. I can't imagine finding Concetta's record without a surname, but I keep hoping.
Thank you so much.

Jim,
It's not inexpensive ($27), but her SS Application should have her maiden name and her parent's names

Hi Valarie,

I am confused. If this is Concetta, why is her name on S.S. Infusine? Where would you find this info? The census indicates she carried her married surname. I have never seen this name before. Did I miss something?
Please don't misunderstand, I am delighted with the info. I just can't figure out your source.
Thank you for your help.
