Translation Assistance

Post by Felitti-Trimarco »

Hello everyone!

I just received a wedding announcement for my great great grandparents from 1891. I had a family member overseas translate it, but his interpretation was a little rough. I was wondering if anyone on here could help me with a more elegant translation. In particular, the last few sentences don't make any sense to me. A photo of the document is posted at the link below.

http://s897.photobucket.com/albums/ac17 ... IM0047.jpg

Here is the translation from my relative:

To our beloved parents
the bridegroom and the bride
Pasqualino and Nicoletta
who united their hearts among a lot of resentment
in the memorable day
June, 13rd, 1891
this present offer today
in sign of esteem and undying respect
towards who let that the bad arts of envious people
could appear as ungrateful.

New York Sept. 26.th, 1891

Pasqualino Felitti
Nicoletta

Thanks you everyone for readingmy message and many thank in advance for any help anyone can offer!

vest wishes,

To our Beloved parents...
The bridal couple Pasqualino and Nicoletta hearts
were united in marriage on this memorable date of June 13,1891.
Accept this as an offering of our undying esteem and respect.

New York, September26, 1891

Pasqualino Felitti
Nicoletta

Hello!

Thanks for the translation! So does it not say anything to the effect of "who united their hearts among a lot of resentment" as in the original translation? That particular line would be very important in my research on this side of the family.

Thanks so much for your help!

sincerely,

FT

Also, the last two lines were originally translated as:

"in sign of esteem and undying respect
towards who let that the bad arts of envious people
could appear as ungrateful."

Was that an incorrect translation? Is there any reference to "bad arts of envious people" is the italian? THANKS SO MUCH!

I was under the impression that the translation was bad to start with and wanted a revision of what it should be. The personal commentary is beyond my ken since it could be translated several different ways none of which achieves your goal of an exact translation. =Peter=

The construction of the original sentence is a little bit weird, following is the correct translation:

The bridal couple
Pasqualino and Nicoletta,
who united their hearts among a lot of resentment
in the memorable day
June, 13rd, 1891,
today offer this present
to the beloved parents
as a sign of esteem and everlasting respect
towards who was depicted as ungrateful by the malice of envious people.
