Carmela De Santis/Ermando Dostillio (D'istilio) 1916

Post by KevinFrancis »

My great grandmother, Carmela De Santis, and grandfather, Ermando Dostillio ("D'istilio" on the Ellis Island passenger manifest) emigrated from Penne in 1916 and settled in Chester, PA. Her husband (my great grandfather) was named Serafino. I would like to get any information anyone may have about my family, past or present - either the Dostillios or the De Santises.

Thanks!

Hi, and welcome to the forum,

I am posting the manifest for reference.

The manifest does give Carmela's mother's name as Maria De March???( I can't read the rest.

The name D' Ostilio appears today in a town called Penna Sant'Andrea.

Wow, this is all too much! Thank you ever so much for starting me along this journey. I have made great strides in researching the genealogy of my Irish father, but had stalled on my Italian mother's side. Thank you for the manifests. I had a copy of my grandfather (Ermando) and great-grandmother (Carmela), but nothing for Serafino. Thank you for taking the time to research these for me, regardless! My uncle had done some research in the past and claimed the D'Ostilio/D'Istilio name was one of the oldest in Europe. I am not sure how to validate that, but I hope to have a fruitful journey thanks to you!

Thats why we are here by golly! The oldest surnames in Europe are recorded in Irish histories back to 916.

misbris, PeterTimber and vj,

I am humbled by your generosity in uncovering these artifacts for me and my family. Aside from the extraordinarily helpful and pertinent links you have provided, all I had was the 1916 Duca D'Aosta passenger manifest from EllisIsland.org. I had nothing else before your assistance. My grandparents have long since passed and I am afraid any family records we personally hold are non-existent.

Thank you all for your kindness and generosity. With each layer peeled back, I grow more and more fevered to uncover the next!
