It's like I keep telling my wife, before you pull that carpet off the main staircase in our 1920's era house, you had better be prepared to deal with what you find underneath. Sure, you might find beautiful oak stair-treads, but you might just as well find a needed $4,000 refinishing job instead...

Cimarelli is common in modern Italy; Zamarelli is non-existant. I would definitely stick with Cimarelli on the east side of the Atlantic.

However, that does not mean that they did not use Zamarelli in this country. You will have to research both names as you move forward until you can be certain.

If you know American cities and approximate dates of births, deaths or marriages, the city archives can be a treasure..... even if you only know the first name for sure, and that the last name is Italian. If you can find a DOD on the SSDI, that's a great help, but even without it, the city archivist can generally help you locate what you need in very short order. Death indexes are especially useful since they include the name and place of birth of the parents (albeit often mis-spelled and sometimes wrong). With the exact DOD, you can easily find the local obituary notice at the local library/newspaper. Those obits often have clues that lead to branches of the family you never knew existed. The only problem is they are usually on microfiche so you have to physically go to the library or newspaper (how old fashioned!)

Best of luck.

The problem is the family members Im looking for died at times that obituaries werent all too common. Also the social app I have for the person isnt much use now. Shes my GG grandfathers step daughter, so looking up her death index wont provide much info on my grandfather. And I doubt it would have anything about my grand mother. She was old when she died and the relative listed on a death certificate is usually the person closest to the deceased. So it would be a spouse or child. Her mother died about 30-40 years before her so there wont be any mention of her on a death index

It might be a long shot, but I for one did have great luck with the archives 1900 - 1950. And although some of the really old obits were really terse death notices, they did publish them as a matter of course in my town. Maybe I can't extrapolate to all places, but I wouldn't not try. If you're at a blind end, what do you have to loose? Another avenue that you might get from those has to do with leads to cemeteries, family parish and funeral homes. It may not be the "facts" that you're looking for so much as the tangential information, such as who paid for the death costs or an address that will take you, the long way about, to where you want to go.
Ciao~

Why not start again working backward. Oftimes a change in venue or perspective brings to mind that may have been overlooked. =Merely a suggestion. =Peter=

There is a woman by the name of Giuseppa Zammarelli, age 27, on a passenger list with a daughter named Rosina. To access this passenger list, go to www.stevemorse.org. Go to Missing Manifests and put in the date of May 6, 1901, T715, Roll 192, Frame 335. You can view the manifest from this website. They were the next to the last two names on the manifest. Their names were actually crossed off this list, but these may be your ancestors. The town name is hard to read on this manifest, but it should be Stella Cilento, which is in Salerno Province Italy. If you access the passenger cards on www.ellisislandrecords.org, the town name is given as Bella Alende, but I believe it is the town name I gave you, as there is no such place as Bella Alende. Also there are Monzo individuals from that town as well. On the stevemorse website, go to the gold form and you can type in the surnames or even the first letter of the surname and do a soundex search of the town name to get different spellings of the town name. You can also do a sound search of the surname. I can't say for sure that these are your ancestors, but it may be a starting point for you.
