Hi, I am new to this site. I am trying to find my father who lives in Italy. Any help would be great, even just the correct spelling of his last name! Here's what I know:
1) His first name is Walter, his last name is pronounced G-AIR-IN, but I don't know how to spell it.
2) In the late 70's he was on an oil tanker that ran from Japan to Alaska, but his home was always in Italy. I don't know which city, though.
3) He had a wife, who supposedly had breast cancer in the late 1990's.
4) I believe he had 2 or 3 kids, boys and girls, who were in their 30's in the late 1990's.
5) He would be well over 65 years old now.
6) He retired in the late 1990's from whatever company he had worked for on the ship.
Looking for my father - Walter Guerin (spelling?)

Try Guaran also as a possibility, and yes, it is a surname of the Friuli Venetzia Giulia.
In my limited experience, people from that part of Italy are very attached to their home villages and even if they emigrate, they very often return there to retire, or after they have made their money.
I'm not American, but wouldn't the Maritime Authorities at his ports of call (and you or your mother must know at least one of them) have records of his embarcations? Are there no Maritime Unions in Alaska (or Italy for that matter) who may have records of a seaman of that name travelling that route?
Also, the Shipping companies exporting oil from Alaska to Japan (there cant be that many) may have ships manifests.
You should note that "Walter" in Italian may be spelt "Valter"
Hope this helps.

Maybe he stayed in Alaska. There are a few Guerin listed in Alaska. Go to www.numberway.com. Sometimes first names in families trigger your memory. =Peter=
