Post by chrisdamato »

Has anybody heard of a town/place called Sarseiao? My great grandfather listed this as the town of his birth, but so far I can't find anything even remotely close to that name.

Please HELP!!!

I looked here, nothing jumped out at me. Perhaps you can look through the S's and see if you have better luck.

Hi mj :D !
Great find
How about 'S Arsenio'
Sant'Arsenio, Salerno
The WWII Card could be SARSENIO

If you post a pic of the document where you found the birthplace, maybe we can better help you.

Thanks, no luck. The only thing I can think of is that the town sounds like the way I spelled it but is written differently. Whoever wrote the town name on his records must have done it phonetically.

VJ,

Yes, that's my great grandfather. Someone else mentioned S Arsenio too. I saw that previously, but no Pietro D'Amatos are listed from that area on Ancestry.com or FamilySearch.org

How would that be pronouned in Italian? Would it be something like Sar-sayn-yo?

One way that may resolve his place of birth would be to order his SS Application ($27)
Valarie

Social Security Application SS-5

His SS# is available here if you don’t already have it:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... _form=true

About the SS Application:
http://genealogy.about.com/od/online_re ... equest.htm
The SS-5, or Application for Social Security Number is a great resource for learning more about individuals who died after about 1960, and generally includes the following:
- Full name
- Full name at birth, including maiden name
- Present mailing address
- Age at last birthday
- Date of birth
- Place of birth
- Father's full name
- Mother's full name, including maiden name

- Sex
- Race as indicated by the applicant
- Whether the applicant ever applied for Social Security or Railroad Retirement before
- Current employer's name and address
- Date signed
- Applicant's signature
Order form SSA-711 (can be done online):

VJ posted the WW2 draft card that lists the town of his birth. If anyone thinks that may, in fact, be S Arsenio, let me know.

The manifest might give his last town of residence, or port town rather than town of birth. Take a look at these manifest to see if any may be a possibility.

Also check alt. spellings( Damato, D amato, D Amato.)

VJ,

I submitted a request to the SS Administration via the link you provided. I certainly hope that his parents names appear on the documents. That has been a dead end for a long time.

Chris
So far I've been very lucky with the requests that I've made.
Although I don't believe proof of any of the information was required, folks seemed to have done their best to fill out their application carefully.
