Racanelli

Post by AnnetteJ65 »

I am looking for my husbands family. His grandfather...Sylvestro Racanelli was from Bari. He was born Oct. 25, 1896. He was married in Bari, but then when he came to the states he married again to Angelina Di Orio.

Hi Annette, welcome to the forum! :D

While I wasn't able to find Sylvestro's immigration record, I can say with a good amount of certainty that his exact town of origin was Sannicandro di Bari, Bari, Italy based on these immigration records:

http://www.ellisisland.org/search/match ... &dwpdone=1

You can order Sannicandro di Bari civil records on microfilm from your local Family History Center for a fee of $5.00. Here is a link to find your local FHC:

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library ... et_fhc.asp

You can also send a letter to the comune to this address:

Via Guglielmo Marconi, 2, 70028 Sannicandro di Bari BA, Italy? - 080 9936111? (You might want to double check that address before sending a letter, although I believe that is correct)

If you don't speak Italian you can use these form letters:

http://www.circolocalabrese.org/resourc ... /index.asp

Hope this helps!!
My Italian surnames:

Caserta: Maietta, Rossano, Tessitore, Negro, Peluso, Musone

You can also ask for a copy of Silvestro's Application for the Social Security Number:

Social Security Death Index
about Silvestro Racanelli
Name: Silvestro Racanelli
SSN: 541-12-5822
Born: 25 Oct 1896
Died: Apr 1956
State (Year) SSN issued: Oregon (Before 1951)

On the application you can find these helpful dates:

From
http://genealogy.about.com/od/online_re ... equest.htm

The SS-5, or Application for Social Security Number is a great resource for learning more about individuals who died after about 1960, and generally includes the following:

•Full name
•Full name at birth, including maiden name
•Present mailing address
•Age at last birthday
•Date of birth
•Place of birth (city, county, State)
•Father's full name
•Mother's full name, including maiden name
•Sex
•Race as indicated by the applicant
•Whether the applicant ever applied for Social Security or Railroad Retirement before
•Current employer's name and address
•Date signed
•Applicant's signature

For references:

Oregon Death Index, 1903-98
about Silvestro Racanelli
Name: Racanelli, Silvestro
County: Multnomah
Death Date: 6 Apr 1956
Certificate: 4575

Do you have his death certificate?

Here is a US Naturalization Declaration of Intention for Silvestro Racanelli of Sannicandro, Italy. Born 25 October 1896. Probably couldn't find a ship manifest for him because he entered the USA through Texas/Mexico border.

While the above document includes the great bonus of a photo, the following is the Petition for Naturalization. It is clearer...

Thank you all so much!! What a ton of information you have given me. The picture...what can I say!! Thank you, thank you, thank you. He will not be on any ship manifest, he was a stowaway that is the story that his daughter told me.

Now that I read the records, he did come through Mexico and Texas. This is fantastic. I can not thank you all so much....I have had such a road block with my mother-in-laws family.
