Looking for Falagiarda from Dorsino (soprannome Mercani)

Post by Cily »

Hey,
My name is Cily Falagiarda and I live in Belgium.
Apparently I have distant relatives in the USA.
My greatgrandfather emigrated to the USA (I don't know when exactly) and returned later to Italy, Dorsino. There our family received the nickname Mercani. Can somebody help me find my relatives in the USA?
Thanks!!!!!

Hi Cily and Welcome to IG.

We can try to help you but we would need a bit more information before proceeding.

Can you provide us with your great grandfather's name, and perhaps his possible year of birth? So you know who he married (the maiden name would be great).

Hope I am understanding this correctly....

Was Mercani the name he was given when he came to the USA, or when he returned to Italy? Do you know what is was before?

Meanwhile, you may want to look over these sites to help you get started.

Steve Morse Search Engine and

Ellis Island. You will need to register a user name and password but the site is free and will help you search ship manifests up to 1924 (providing that he went through the New York Port at Ellis).

While you are there, have a look around Steve's other pages as well. They provide a lot of very good and useful information.

Hi Nuccia,
I have to look if I find more info.
Mercani was a nickname given to the family when he came back in Dorsino. His last name was Falagiarda, but apparently in the Dorsino region the families are better known with their nickname.
Thanks for the links

There is Christina Falagiarda in Parachute Colorado. You can go to 1-800-877-3272 for her address and telephone but you have to pay something. =Peter=

Mercani seems to be a contraction of "Americani"=Americans. They got the nickname because they were coming from America...

There is a listing for the E-mail address for NELLO FALAGIARDA in the USA at www.intellus.com (either $1.95 or $4.95 not sure which). =Peter=

Hi,
I found this:
Falagiarda Giovanni 07/04/1858 29/07/1942
Falagiarda Adelinda 18/03/1862 02/07/1933

But I don't know the maidenname of my greatgrandmother yet.

Greetings,
Cily

Valarie,
the cousin's name on ship manifest is Barni RUFFINO in Denver.

Ada,
Besides not being able to decipher either name,
I couldn't figure out which name was the surname.
Thank you!
That makes sense.
